Actress Goldie Hawn, 79, shared a rare comment about her daughter, Kate Hudson's teenage years.
Entertainment Weekly reported that Hawn discussed parenting her children, Kate Hudson,Oliver Hudson, and Wyatt Russell, while at a special screening of the 1974 film, The Sugarland Express, on May 29. While speaking at the event, Hawn said she did not allow Kate to start working in the industry until she was an adult. According to Hawn, who started her career in Hollywood at 23, casting directors and agents wanted Kate to star in different projects when she was still a high school student.
"I didn't call an agent and ask them to be represented. I never did that. In fact, they wanted Katie for some show, and she was still in high school," said Hawn during the event. "And I didn't let her do it because I didn't want her at that age, I wanted her to live a normal life, finish school, at which point you figure that out, but don't start too soon."
Hawn also said her children do not ask her or her longtime partner, Kurt Russell, for any acting advice.
"They don't want advice from their parents. Who does? They're doing it on their own," said Hawn.
While Kate may not take her mother's acting advice, she has voiced her appreciation for Hawn's other tips. For instance, in a February 2016 interview on the Rachael Ray Show, Kate said that her mother helped her manage her anxiety when she was first beginning her career as an actress in the late '90s. Kate said she was "traveling so much" and "missed [her] family so much," causing her to feel extremely emotional. According to Kate, Hawn helped her "calm [her] nervous system down" by sharing a specific technique with her.
"My mom kind of took me through this visual experience. She asked me to squint my eyes really small. And to try to look at everything like I was looking at it for the first time," said Kate during the interview.
Kate also shared that her mother offered her romantic advice during a 2016 interview with Entertainment Tonight. The actress referenced that Hawn and Russell have been in a relationship since 1983.
"I think what they have in terms in connection is really rare and beautiful. But it doesn't come without its stuff as well," said Kate to Entertainment Tonight. "Her best advice, I think, is be true to yourself when connected intimately, it's a huge time of growth. So it's to sort of except what it is, even if it's uncomfortable."
