Imane Khelif has been barred from competing in next week’s Eindhoven Box Cup by World Boxing.
The governing body, which was recognised by the IOC earlier this year, will sanction the event in the Netherlands from June 5 to 10.
As a result, Khelif must undergo mandatory sex testing in order to compete.
It comes after World Boxing confirmed the introduction of the policy on Friday to determine the eligibility of all participants.
The move followed the Algerian fighter’s announcement she intended to appear in Eindhoven.
A statement read: “World Boxing will introduce mandatory sex testing, to determine the eligibility of male and female athletes that want to take part in its competitions.
“The introduction of mandatory testing will be part of a new policy on ‘Sex, Age and Weight’ to ensure the safety of all participants and deliver a competitive level playing field for men and women.
“In light of plans to introduce this policy and the particular circumstances surrounding some boxers that competed at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, World Boxing has written to the Algerian Boxing Federation to inform it that Imane Khelif will not be allowed to participate in the female category at the Eindhoven Box Cup or any World Boxing event until Imane Khelif undergoes sex testing.
“This decision reflects concerns over the safety and wellbeing of all boxers, including Imane Khelif, and aims to protect the mental and physical health of all participants in light of some of the reactions that have been expressed in relation to the boxer’s potential participation at the Eindhoven Box Cup.”
The Eindhoven Box Cup would have represented Khelif’s first competitive action since the Paris Olympics.
Her decision came after previously revealed she planned to turn professional back in October.
However, she will now have to undergo a PCR test in order to fight in World Boxing sanctioned competitions.
World Boxing have revealed the Olympic champion would have to undergo mandatory sex testingAFP Khelif has not fought since winning gold in Paris last summerAFPThe tests are used to detect the SRY gene, which reveals the presence of the Y chromosome, an indicator of biological sex.
Tests can be conducted by taking a nasal or oral swab, saliva or blood.
Khelif won gold in the women’s 66kg weight class in the French capital last summer.
The 26-year-old also claimed silver at the 2022 World Championship in Istanbul.
However, her triumph in Paris prompted a gender row alongside Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting, who won gold in the 57kg class.
It came after two gender eligibility tests conducted by the IBA in 2022 and 2023, respectively, alleged the pair had XY chromosomes.
They were subsequently banned by the IBA, which was later stripped of its right to govern boxing at the Olympics.
As a result, they were cleared to compete by the Paris Boxing Unit.
