90s Boy Band Singer, 51, Makes Rare Comment About Marriage With Pop Star Ex-Wife

Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson were all the rage in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They were mega stars and among the first famous faces to venture into reality TV.

During an appearance on the Richer Lives podcast, the 98 Degrees star opened up about Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. The show followed Simpson and Lachey as they settled into married life.

“Newlyweds obviously became a huge reality show. The only one that had come out before that was The Osbournes, which was also a massive show. But that show was created as a vehicle to promote music,” he expressed.

Lachey explained that the couple signed up for six episodes to help promote their upcoming albums. However, what ended up happening was not something either of them could have foreseen.

“We had no idea it was going to take on this other life of being this reality fly-on-the-wall type of show. So, that was totally unexpected,” the singer spilled.

The Love Is Blind host also shared that when filming began, he and Simpson were given a strict rule that he simply could not follow. They were not allowed to talk to the crew, and that was something Lachey was not here for.

“You're not going to be in my house and watch my every move, and we're not going to talk to each other. We got to get past that right now,"' Lachey stated. “So I actually came to really love the crew. I remember crying the day we shut down because you develop relationships with them. They really became family.”

Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica ran for three seasons on MTV, ending when Simpson filed for divorce from Lachey. The MTV show was part of the changing landscape of reality TV, paving the way for shows like Keeping Up With The Kardashians and The Hills.

Life today looks a lot different for Lachey, who has been happily married to Vanessa Minnillo Lachey for 14 years. They share three children: sons Camden, 12, and Phoenix, 8, and daughter Brooklyn, 10.

Simpson went on to marry Eric Johnson but announced their divorce in January 2025. The couple has three children: daughters Maxwell, 12, and Birdie, 5, and son Ace, 11.
