Fests run the gamut this San Diego weekend – one makes its debut in East County, while another up north celebrates its 75th year.
That would be Valley Center Western Days, which opens at 5 p.m. Friday. The big anniversary event includes the festival and chili cook-off on Friday and a pancake breakfast at 6 a.m. Saturday, along with the Western Days Parade at 10 a.m. along Valley Center Road. A car show kicks off as the festival opens at 11 a.m. Gates open at the same time Sunday with a tamale contest. The main stage features performances by Kimmi Bitter and Sazon Tumbao. The free fest is at Valley Center Community Hall & Park, 28246 Lilac Road.
Artivál debuts Saturday in downtown El Cajon. It’s billed as East County’s first-ever arts festival, bringing together local creatives, musicians, food trucks and more. The Art Walk opens at 10 a.m., with the wine and beer garden, along with live music, to follow at noon. More than 50 artists and makers are set to take part in the free event at Main Street and Magnolia Avenue.

Solana Beach’s 44th annual Fiesta del Sol opens and top acts on the bill for the weekend music fest, at Fletcher Cove Park, include Z-Trip and Missing Persons on Saturday and the White Buffalo and Through the Roots on Sunday. Performances start at 10:30 a.m. both days. There’s also a kids zone, vendors and arts and crafts. The fest is free, but VIP tickets are available.
The Port of San Diego hosts the second annual “A Day at the Park: A Port Experiences Series” at César Chávez Park in Barrio Logan beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday. The free family-friendly, multicultural celebration features local performers, artists, vendors, kid-friendly activities and more.
The Kuumba Fest at Marie Widman Park in Skyline begins at 11 a.m. Saturday and includes an African Marketplace with an artist village, DJ, youth play, obstacle course competition, dance and step showcase and a finale concert. The free day, billed as a “celebration day of positive challenges and rejuvenation,” is sponsored by SD Urban Warriors. Kuumba, by the way, means creativity in Swahili.
Lotus Magazine’s AAPI Pop-up Market, for handcrafted goods by Asian-American and Pacific Islander artisans, lands at Kilowatt Brewing in Kearny Mesa at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Big Wet, at 3 p.m. Saturday, is a one-day festival featuring dance music, immersive art and more at the Soap Factory on Commercial Street. More than 20 local DJ’s will spin across three stages against a backdrop of large-scale art. Look for tattoos, food vendors and a few surprises. Tickets cost $55.
For the final weekend of May, also National Mental Health Awareness Month, Voices of Our City choir hosts Behind the Music at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The choir, launched in San Diego as a creative outlet for homeless people, will participate in artistic activities prior to the 7 p.m. concert and sing-a-long at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral on Sixth Avenue. Admission is $35.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon returns Sunday bright and early as runners take over the streets, fanning out from Balboa Park through Uptown, sweeping to Mission Bay and back downtown to reach the finish line. Lining the 26-mile route and giving encouragement to the runners is free, and there will be performers along the way to keep everyone entertained and inspired. Starting gun is at 6:15 a.m.
Prefer to close our your weekend with vino, but want to keep it local? Head to Bernardo Winery at 1 p.m. Sunday for the 2025 Vintners Wine Festival. It exclusively features San Diego County wines, many of them award winners. The $95 ticket includes unlimited wine tasting, charcuterie, a silent auction and music. Participants include San Pasqual Winery, Highland Valley Vineyards and Correcaminos Vineyard.
