Chiefs announces strict deadline over Arrowhead plans or face leaving Kansas City for new $3 billion stadium

THE Kansas City Chiefs might have an answer about the future of their stadium soon.

Missouri Government officials are set to meet to discuss the funding of Arrowhead Stadium’s renewal or replacement.

Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe has called a special session of the state legislature that will take place on June 3.

There, the government will review a bill that would allow the Chiefs and neighboring Kansas City Royals to bond up to the annual amount they generate in state tax revenue over 30 years.

That would give them the funding for half of a new stadium or a stadium renovation.

The state government is working quick out of the fear that the Chiefs will leave if they don’t get a deal from the state.

“If Missouri does not put some sort of offer forward, I think the risk is real that they don’t stay here,” Kehoe said.

Missouri’s neighbor, Kansas, has already expressed an interest in pulling the Chiefs or Royals, or both, over into their borders.

On top of that, Jackson County voters strongly opposed funding the stadiums last year.

Many state legislators don’t want to fund private sports teams, and there is also a need for funds for the St. Louis area that was ravaged by tornadoes.

“I love the Kansas City Chiefs. I’m obnoxious during football season,” Republican state Rep. Darin Chappell told KSGF-FM.

“But I’ve got constituents trying to pay their rent and feed themselves, and they’re struggling.

“And I’m going to take their money and give it to billionaires so multimillionaires can play in a prettier place? That’s obscene.”

Governor Kehoe insists that the State needs to keep the teams by any means possible for the economic benefits.

“If they move out of our state, the significant effect it’s going to have on our state’s economy is massive,” Kehoe said.

“This isn’t just about football and baseball. This is about economic development.

“These are two organizations that have businesses, employees, and a ripple effect on our state’s economy that we do not want to move.”

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt wants his stadium plans in order by the end of the Summer.

The Missouri state legislature is seemingly working on his schedule to try figuring something out.

The Chiefs’ lease at Arrowhead ends in 2031, and if they aren’t staying there the team plans to have a new stadium ready for the moment the lease expires.
