Islamic State claims attack in As-Suwayda

The Islamic State group claimed on Thursday, May 29, that it carried out an attack against Syrian government forces in the As-Suwayda desert.

The group published a statement through its official channels (closed newsrooms that include journalists), which researchers relayed, stating that an explosive device planted by its fighters exploded a vehicle belonging to the “Syrian regime” near the al-Safa Hills area in the As-Suwayda desert, resulting in damage to the vehicle and killing or injuring 7 personnel.

In another statement, the group said an explosive device planted by its fighters exploded a vehicle belonging to the “Free Syrian Army militia” in the al-Safa Hills area, killing one member and injuring three others.

The Syrian Alikhbaria official channel reported on Thursday that six people were injured when an explosive device exploded in an ambulance transporting patients for kidney dialysis on the pathway to Areeqa Najran in the western countryside of As-Suwayda.

The Islamic State group has returned to some of its activity over the past few weeks, attacking the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), albeit with a change in tactics.

On May 19, a member of the SDF was killed and another was injured as a result of an attack launched by a group of the Islamic State, which targeted an SDF checkpoint in the town of al-Bahra in the Hajin area, located east of Deir Ezzor.

The SDF stated that this was the tenth such attack from the Islamic State since the beginning of the current month, indicating that the continuous attacks by the group on its military positions “reflect the challenges it faces and highlight the importance of its efforts to root out terrorism and maintain security and stability in the region.”

The Syrian government’s share of attacks from the Islamic State has been different; it has not directly attacked government forces but has established cells within cities, threatening potential strikes following Islamic State’s repeated calls for what it refers to as “migrants” (foreign fighters) to join its ranks.

The latest confrontation between the Syrian government and the Islamic State occurred in the al-Haidariya neighborhood, one of the eastern districts of Aleppo, on May 17, leading to the death of one Islamic State member and the detention of four others, as well as the death of one member of the General Security Forces.

An Enab Baladi correspondent in Aleppo reported that an Islamic State cell member detonated himself during the raid, and video footage published by the Ministry of Interior showed an Islamic State member attacking General Security Forces and detonating himself during the clashes.

The Interior Ministry also stated that it managed to storm the site, seizing explosive devices, a suicide vest, and several uniforms belonging to the security forces that were in the possession of the cell members.

Yesterday, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced the commencement of a coordination unit consisting of Turkey, Syria, and Jordan in Damascus to combat the Islamic State group.

Zeki Aktürk, the spokesperson for the Turkish Ministry of Defense, said in a press conference on Thursday, May 29, that the joint coordination unit for combating the Islamic State began its mission in Syria on May 19, and personnel had been assigned from Turkey to the coordination unit.

On May 27, the International Coalition led by the United States stated that it repositioned its forces in Syria “as part of a well-planned strategy” to combat the Islamic State.

The International Coalition affirmed in a tweet via its account on the X platform that the repositioning of its forces in Syria is part of a deliberate plan based on developments in the field and aims at undermining the capabilities of the Islamic State and enhancing regional stability.
