As the Indian cricket set to enter the transition phase, Jasprit Bumrah has finally broken his silence on his retirement plans after Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin called time on their Test careers. While Kohli and Rohit will continue playing ODIs, as the duo have now retired from both Tests and T20Is, Ashwin has retired from international cricket.
After the trio’s retirements, there is one question making rounds among the fans and cricket experts, and that’s whether Jasprit Bumrah will follow suit, at least in one of the three formats, given the history of his injuries. The 31-year-old pacer is the backbone of India’s pace attack.
Bumrah remains one of the most feared fast bowlers in world cricket in all three formats of the game. Recently, the Indian speedster opened up about his mindset during a candid chat with former Australian skipper Michael Clarke. He made it clear that he’s not done yet.

However, Bumrah admitted that the clock is ticking, saying the lost time due to injuries has taught him one thing, that nothing lasts forever, and he knows the finish line will eventually come. And when it does, he wants to bow out with pride, giving back to the game that gave him everything.
Jasprit Bumrah told Michael Clarke on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast, “This is a sport that I fell in love with. I went to Australia this time, and a lot of youngsters came up to me and tried to copy my [bowling] action. Which is surreal because I used to do that. So yeah, this journey will not always go on, but whenever it ends, I want to give it back to the sport. Because whatever I have and whatever I have learned in life is through this sport. Thankful for the journey that I have had.”
Jasprit Bumrah opens up about his smarter career planning
Bumrah might have lifted only the T20 World Cup trophy so far, but he's well aware that playing non-stop cricket comes at a cost. He revealed that he is now taking a smarter approach to managing his body and career, saying it is tough to keep playing everything for so long.
The Mumbai Indians bowler was India’s standout bowler during the grueling Test tour of Australia, where he picked up a staggering 32 wickets, but eventually faced another setback with a back injury that forced him to miss the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

After which, Bumrah has started prioritizing key tournaments while being careful not to overstrain himself and make sure he stays fit for the big moments without burning out. He noted, “You have to be a little selective and smart about how you use your body. Obviously, as a cricketer, I would never want to leave anything and always keep on going.”
I am ok, but I don't set goals: Jasprit Bumrah
Well, Jasprit Bumrah is keeping things simple when it comes to his cricket future. The fast bowler stressed that he is not chasing numbers or setting long-term targets.
The fast bowler mentioned that he is clear that if his body starts to struggle or the hunger to play fades, he’ll know it’s time to step away, but till then, he wants to give his best each time.
He signed off by saying, “At this moment, I am ok. But I don't set goals such as this is the number I should be at. I look at it one day at a time. The journey is going well so far, but the day I realize that the drive is gone, or the effort is not there, or my body is not holding up, that is the time when you make the decision.”
