Alonso: ‘Fantastic’ Newey presence in Monaco elevated Aston

The Monaco Grand Prix may have ended in heartbreak for Fernando Alonso, but the Spanish veteran found a silver lining in the principality: the arrival of legendary designer Adrian Newey in Aston Martin’s garage.

As the team’s new managing technical partner, Newey made his debut in green at Monaco, and Alonso is already buzzing about the transformative impact of the F1 design guru.

Speaking ahead of his home race in Barcelona this weekend, the two-time world champion didn’t hold back on his admiration for Newey’s eagle-eyed expertise and the electric atmosphere he brings to Aston Martin.

With the team enduring a torrid 2025 season, Alonso’s enthusiasm signals hope for a turnaround as Newey’s influence begins to take root.

    Newey’s Immediate Impact

While Newey’s primary focus is Aston Martin’s next-generation 2026 car – powered by Honda engines under the new regulations – the Briton is taking an interest in this year’s troubled contender.

Team boss Andy Cowell revealed that Newey has been sharing insights on the AMR25 during lunch discussions at Silverstone.

But for Alonso, who’s suffered a point-less season so far, the legendary designer’s arrival in Monaco was a game-changer.

“Yeah it was fantastic,” Alonso said in the FIA press conference on Thursday in Spain.

“I think the way he sees things on the car, even statically in the pit lane or on the grid, also in the garage, spotting some things we could have done better or do better in the future but also just his presence in the meeting room it’s always special.”

Newey’s reputation as a technical mastermind obviously precedes him, and Alonso noted how his presence elevated the team’s focus.

“Not intimidating but I think the level of the team was higher thanks to his presence because everyone was more focused, more into the details of the car,” he explained.

"You can't say anything too far from the truth"

The F1 veteran, known for his sharp racing instincts, was particularly impressed by Newey’s ability to cut through fluff.

“People that were talking in the meetings know they can’t say anything too far from the truth because he will spot it,” Alonso added with a grin.

It’s a testament to the great engineer’s aura – his mere presence demands precision and accountability, pushing Aston Martin to sharpen their game.

But Alonso’s excitement isn’t just about the here and now. He’s already looking ahead to 2026, when Newey’s vision will fully shape the team’s Honda-powered challenger.

“I think that was great to witness and I hope next year with more races that he will come we will keep learning from him and getting better as a team,” the Spaniard said.

For a driver who’s battled through a luckless 2025, Newey’s arrival feels like a beacon of hope.

    A Season of Struggles

Alonso’s enthusiasm for Newey’s arrival comes during what has been a deeply frustrating campaign.

The Spaniard currently sits 18th in the championship, still without a single point this season. In Monaco, he was poised for a top-seven finish before an engine issue forced a heartbreaking retirement.

Earlier in Imola, Alonso rued his misfortune when a poorly timed Safety Car wiped out his strategic advantage, calling himself the “unluckiest driver on the grid” after another missed opportunity.

While teammate Lance Stroll has managed to extract three top-te results from the AMR25, Alonso’s side of the garage has been marred by reliability issues and ill-timed events.

But with his home crowd ready to roar this weekend in Barcelona, the 43-year-old remains focused and hopeful – and now, more than ever, backed by a technical icon whose influence is already sharpening minds in green.
