IONE — A convicted killer from Alameda County currently serving a term at Mule Creek State Prison for forcible rape of a mentally disabled woman, is under investigation in a suspected homicide of his cellmate May 21, authorities said.
The 54-year-old inmate is suspected in the death of Longeno Jones, 51, which prison officials said is being investigated as a homicide.
Jones was found unresponsive in his cell during a medication distribution about 5:14 p.m. May 21. Prison staff immediately began life-saving measures and he was taken to the prison’s triage and treatment area, where paramedics pronounced him deceased at 5:45 p.m.
Jones’ cellmate was removed from the cell and placed in the restrictive housing unit pending investigation. A cause of death for Jones has not been released yet. The Amador County Coroner’s Office has not responded to repeated requests for information about the case.
The death is under investigation by the prison’s Investigative Services Unit and the Amador County District Attorney’s Office. Prison officials would only say Thursday the investigation is continuing.
Officials said Jones, 51, had been in prison since a conviction in Los Angeles County in July 2007. He was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree burglary as a third striker, with various enhancements.
His cellmate was most recently received in the prison system from Alameda County on Jan. 28, 2019. He was sentenced to twelve years for forcible rape as a second striker. It was not immediately known how long he had been at Mule Creek prison or how long he and Jones were cellmates.
The current sentencing resulted from an April 2018 Hayward case where the man raped a then 67-year-old mentally disabled woman he did not know, according to court documents. He was linked to the assault through DNA and the victim was able to identify him as her attacker, court records say. After his arrest at Santa Rita Jail, where he was being held for a parole violation, he admitted his involvement in the rape, court records say.
He was charged with forcible rape and kidnapping to commit a sex crime in the case. But in a plea deal in December 2018 he pleaded no contest and was convicted of the rape charge; the kidnapping count was dismissed. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison in January 2019.
The man also has a prior conviction for voluntary manslaughter for a January 2007 stomping death of another man in Union City, according to court documents and prior media accounts.
He was a 36-year-old Union City transient at the time when he was charged with murder in the stomping death of a 52-year-old man. That victim — a father of three daughters — was beaten in front of a liquor store on Decoto Road near Mission Boulevard. A motive for the attack was never officially determined.
In a January 2008 plea deal, the man pleaded no contest and was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the death. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison in March of 2008, court records say.
