Canelo Alvarez’s former foe fails drug test after avenging upset of the year as rival demands action

Jaime Munguia has failed a post-fight drug test following his rematch with Bruno Surace.

On Wednesday, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) informed all relevant parties that Munguia’s A-sample returned an adverse analytical finding for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites in a urine sample collected on May 4, one day after their sequel.

Munguia got knocked out by Surace last December, but avenged his loss in a rematch

Munguia now has ten days to request analysis of his B-sample to check for laboratory errors or contamination.

If the B-sample returns the same result, Munguia could face disciplinary action and even have his win overturned by authorities.

Reacting to the news, Surace said: “I’m shocked by the news that Jaime Munguia tested positive for a banned substance.

“There’s no place in boxing for cheating.

“The sport is dangerous enough already.

“I went to Mexico and knocked out Munguia fair and square in December.

“And I was gracious enough to give him a rematch in May.

“He knew he could not beat me on a level playing field.

“I was trust that this result will be overturned immediately.”

Munguia defeated Surace via unanimous decision on the Canelo Alvarez vs William Scull undercard in Saudi Arabia following an upset of the year loss to the Frenchman last December.

Munguia went 12 rounds with Canelo last yearGetty

Seven months before their inaugural encounter, Munguia had gone 12 rounds with Canelo for the undisputed super middleweight crown and was expected to dispatch the unheralded Surace without issue.

The bookies priced Munguia as an overwhelming -4000 betting favourite.

But Surace shocked the boxing world by flattening his adversary with a dynamite right hand in the sixth round.

Surace had arguably lost every round before the eventual stoppage.

The loss scuppered plans for a WBC interim title fight between Munguia and top-rated contender Christian Mbilli.

Instead, a rematch was made, which Munguia won with a disciplined display.
