MotoGP rider Luca Marini is under hospital observation after a horrifying testing incident.
The Italian, who is the half-brother of motorsport legend Valentino Rossi sustained a collapsed lung and multiple other serious injuries.
A statement from his Honda team read: “On Wednesday, May 28, Luca Marini suffered a heavy fall while testing for the Suzuka 8-Hour and will remain in Japan for observation and recovery.
“After the British GP, Luca Marini travelled to the Suzuka Circuit for a first test on the CBR1000RR-R SP.
“Having completed a successful first day, the Italian began the second day of his program but crashed heavily.
“Suffering from a dislocated left hip, damage to the ligaments in his left knee, fractures in the sternum and left collarbone, and a right-sided pneumothorax [collapsed lung], Marini was transferred to local hospital and stabilised.
“Marini will remain under observation in Japan until he is deemed fit to travel.
“Honda HRC and the Honda HRC Castrol team will support Marini fully in his recovery.”
Marini since posted an update from hospital, captioning an image of himself with the words: “Thanks for all the support! Keeping ya’ll updated.”
The Suzuka 8-hour is a legendary endurance motorcycle race which Marini hadn’t even been confirmed to be contesting in.
Currently racing in MotoGP for Honda, the 27-year-old finished 15th in the British Grand Prix on August 10.
He then jetted straight from Silverstone to Japan where the testing accident took place.
Marini is the tallest rider on the MotoGP grid and there were doubts he’d be able to join fellow Honda rider Johann Zarco in sharing the same bike.
Marini is the half brother of Italian icon RossiGettyThat question is now out of the window following his serious accident, which will also impact his MotoGP season.
The grid heads back to Spain for the Aragon Grand Prix from June 6 to June 8 and Marini will almost certainly be replaced by a stand-in.
The Italian is currently the second-best placed Honda rider in the MotoGP standings, lying 13th with 38 points for the struggling Japanese brand.
His half-brother Rossi, a legendary seven-time MotoGP champion, has also raced the Suzuka 8-hour in the past, winning in 2001.
Reigning world champion Jorge Martin also suffered a lung collapse at race four in Qatar and is yet to return almost two months later.
