Alexander Zverev makes outrageous £275k bet with pundits live on air

What’s the point of having a watch with an in-built gambling feature if you’re not going to use it?

Tennis star Alexander Zverev made sure he showed off the absurd roulette component on his limited edition Jacob & Co Casino Tourbillon watch on TNT Sports’ coverage at the French Open.

Host Adam Lefkoe was in awe of Zverev’s timepiece and said: “I’m having a hard time focusing because he’s wearing one of the coolest watches I’ve ever seen in person in my entire life.”

According to Jacob & Co, the watch is ‘a nod to the elegant gamblers and socialites that populated 1960s Monte Carlo, Macao or Las Vegas’.

Crafted with 18k rose gold and black onyx, the watch would set an individual back an eye-watering £275k.

Despite the six-figure price, Zverev was willing to put it on the line.

“Want to play roulette? Tell me a number,” Zverev said.

The Roland Garros panel, which included Leftkoe, former Australian Open winner Caroline Wozniacki, Wimbledon quarter-finalist Chris Eubanks and former world No. 11 Sam Querrey all called for a number.

Zverev then instantly raised the stakes live on television, with the world as his witness.

“If someone gets the right number, they’re getting my watch,” Zverev said.

Luckily for the German, everyone guessed incorrectly.

It meant the watch would remain on his wrist for the foreseeable future.

Zverev keeping his Jacob & Co timepiece in his collection wasn’t his only win in Paris this year.

The 28-year-old breezed into the second round of the French Open thanks to a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in over America’s Learner Tien.

Zverev showed a ruthless streak as he won 90 per cent of points on his first serve.

He will face world No. 87 Jesper de Jong in the second round after the Dutchman overcame Francesco Passaro in a five-set thriller.

Zverev is hoping to finally shake his tag as tennis’ nearly-man of this era, having reached three grand slam finals but yet to win one.

The world No. 3 was a finalist at the Australian Open in January but lost to Jannik Sinner.

His other two finals were at the French Open and the U.S. Open in 2024 and 2020 respectively.

Zverev’s recent form at Roland Garros points to the German making a deep run given he has reached the semi-finals at every iteration of the tournament since 2021.

In fact, since 2018, he has failed to reach the quarter-finals just once.
