LAPD seeks help to ID participants in illegal downtown rooftop concert, violence and vandalism

LOS ANGELES — Police sought the public’s help Tuesday in identifying individuals involved in an illegal rooftop concert promoted on social media, during which fireworks were launched at a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter and several ground officers were struck by projectiles in Downtown Los Angeles.

Newton Division officers were patrolling the area of 16th and Trinity streets — an area known for illegal warehouse parties — when they came across an unauthorized rooftop concert taking place across two parking lots in the 1700 block of Trinity Street, according to the LAPD.

Police stated that additional community calls reported a large disturbance at the location.

Further investigation revealed that the concert had been promoted on social media without the property owner s permission. The owner confirmed to officers that attendees were trespassing and requested their removal, police said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene after a rooftop fire was reported, but firefighters were unable to approach the flames until police secured the area.

“Efforts to peacefully disperse the crowd were met with escalating hostility,” the police department said in a statement.

“Fireworks were launched at the LAPD helicopter, and officers on the ground were struck with projectiles.”

An unlawful assembly was then declared, and officers deployed several rounds of less-lethal ammunition to regain control of the crowd.

According to police, four officers were injured during the confrontation.

“In addition to injuries, the incident resulted in significant property damage, including vandalism to four MTA rail cars, one LAPD patrol vehicle, and several local businesses,” police said.

Traffic for both vehicles and trains along Washington Boulevard was temporarily halted.

Anyone with information or video footage of the violence and vandalism was urged to submit tips anonymously at LACrimeStoppers.org
