Does the Orange County Republican Party really want to compare criminals?

Last week, the Orange County district attorney charged former Irvine Councilmember Tammy Kim with multiple felonies related to allegations she lied about her residency as a council member and candidate for mayor.

Kim, a Democrat, will have her day in court.

In response to the charges, the Orange County Republican Party tried to make light of the arrest and score some points in the process.

reads, “A new band presented by the Democratic Party of Orange County: The Jailhouse Rock!” Accompanying the post is an image showing Congressman Dave Min, Tustin Councilman Lee Fink and Tammy Kim.

Min, as a state senator, pleaded no contest last year for a DUI arrest. Fink pleaded guilty to battery after an incident in which he shoved an elderly man during a home tour.

    Here’s the thing, though.

Does the Orange County Republican Party really want to compare criminal politicians?

Former Orange County Supervisor Andrew Do, a Republican, literally stole millions of dollars over several years as part of an elaborate scheme to enrich himself and his cronies.

As prosecutors recently put it, “When the county and nation were at their most vulnerable, defendant saw an opportunity to exploit the chaos for his own benefit and, in so doing, betrayed the trust of hundreds of thousands of his constituents. The scheme was far-reaching and premeditated, and defendant had no qualms about pulling others into his criminal enterprise, including his own children.”

    Do is currently awaiting sentencing.

Or what about former Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu?

Sidhu, a Republican, was sentenced in March after pleading guilty  to obstruction of justice, wire fraud and two counts of making false statements to a federal agency.

This was all related to his schemes around the halted Angels stadium deal back in 2022.

“Federal prosecutors’ investigation into Sidhu stemmed in part from the city’s negotiations to sell Angel Stadium to team owner Arte Moreno’s business partnership, where Sidhu provided confidential information to a consultant working for the Angels, according to Sidhu’s signed plea agreement, so that the Angels could buy the stadium on favorable terms,” as this paper reported.

As part of covering his tracks, he destroyed documents and deleted emails. But what he couldn’t delete was an FBI recording of him talking about his hopes of soliciting a $1 million campaign contribution from the Angels.

If we’re comparing criminals here, what Min and Fink did was obviously bad, but their conduct reflected personal failures more than anything.

Do and Sidhu abused their public offices for their own personal benefit.

And then there’s Westminster Councilmember Amy Phan West who pleaded not guilty earlier this year to a misdemeanor charge of  trying to bribe a parking officer.

Whether Kim and Phan West are guilty is for prosecutors to prove and courts to sort out.

But the point here is that neither party is immune from having crooks and criminals in their midst.

Public corruption and criminality by public officials undermines trust and confidence in government, period.

I get what the Orange County Republican Party was doing, but if they thought for a moment, they’d realize their set of recently convicted politicians is a lot worse than recently convicted politicians on the other side of the aisle.

Alas, this is politics, so no one has consistent standards, ever.
