Several ocean earthquakes jostle Northern California coastline

Several earthquakes with epicenters beneath the ocean surface rattled the Northern California coastline early Monday.

The quakes occurred off the shore of Humboldt County and were all located roughly 24 to 29 miles southwest of the Northern California city of Ferndale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The U.S.G.S. reported that the first quake occurred about 1:17 a.m., with more occurring over the next few hours.

The largest of the swarm of quakes, the one that occurred soon after 1 a.m., had a 4.6 magnitude, according to the Geological Survey.

The strongest quake was felt in several communities, including Eureka, Fortuna, Ferndale, Rio Dell, Scotia, Garberville, Petrolia, Piercy and Alderpoint, according to a post on the U.S.G.S. website.

No injuries or damage were immediately reported as a result of the quakes.

The quakes occurred on or next to the San Andreas Fault, the U.S. Geological Survey webpage shows.
