College baseball: Saint Mary’s road to the College World Series starts in Corvallis

After a wild West Coast Conference tournament run that saw the Saint Mary’s baseball team capture the second league title in school history, the Gaels’ pursuit of their first-ever College World Series appearance will begin in Corvallis, Oregon.

The Gaels open the tournament Friday night against No. 8 seed and three-time CWS champion Oregon State. The game 5 p.m. game against the regional hosts will be broadcast on ESPN+. USC will face TCU in the other opener of the double-elimination regional. The 16 regional winners advance to Super Regionals on June 6. The College World Series starts June 13 in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Gaels (35-24) are playing in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2016, when they lost to Coastal Carolina and Navy. SMC was one of 29 conference champions that were automatic qualifiers.

The top five national seeds are Vanderbilt (42-16), Texas (42-12), Arkansas (43-13), Auburn (38-18) and North Carolina (42-12). The entire tournament field was announced Monday.

A week ago, SMC appeared a longshot to be the lone Bay Area team included in the 64-team field vying for a trip to Omaha. Despite their impressive record, the Gaels entered the WCC tournament as the No. 3 seed.

It wasn’t easy, but the Gaels left Las Vegas Ballpark with the conference’s automatic seed after going 4-1 and knocking off top-seeded San Diego 9-8 in a winner-take-all championship game on Saturday night. Earlier that day, the Gaels blew a seven-run lead in the seventh inning, falling 16-13 in 14 innings. Saint Mary’s also had to rally from a 10-4 deficit against No. 4 seed Loyola Marymount just to reach the championship game.

In the deciding game Saturday night, SMC broke a 4-4 tie on Ryan Pierce’s three-run triple followed by Brian Duroff’s RBI double. San Diego rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth and had two runners on base with two out, but reliever John Damozonio ended the threat and secured the NCAA tournament berth with a strikeout. San Diego was not among the at-large teams to make the tournament field.

The Gaels set multiple tournament records including hits (69), runs (63), walks (31) and doubles (18). In addition, Eddie Madrigal set a player tournament record for runs scored with 13.

Cal Poly is playing in the Eugene Regional that included No. 12 seeded Oregon, Utah Valley and Arizona.
