Alpine’s Pierre Gasly was involved in a scary moment during some chaotic early moments at the Monaco Grand Prix.
The Frenchman was coming out of the tunnel into the sunlight at the iconic circuit on lap nine when he seemingly got confused looking for a gap past former teammate Yuki Tsuonda.
Gasly’s front right wheel smashed into the back of the Red Bull, sending him airborne and skating across the chicane.
More worrying than that, though, was that he kept going on three wheels, spreading debris across the final 500 metres of the track.
There was shock in the commentary box at the apparent decision, but then team radio came through revealing Gasly shouting: “I’ve got no brakes!”
The No.10 had to complete his lap as drivers passed with sparks flying, and he then entered the pitlane unable to stop.
Explaining the scenes, pitlane reporter Ted Kravitz said: “Gasly can’t stop!
“He’s had to be stopped by some other mechanics in the pitlane because he’s got no brakes, that was so dangerous!”
It appeared that Williams mechanics were those brave enough to get involved, with Gasly’s car eventually planted outside of their garage.
Rivals may have seen it as an opportunity to pit to another tyre strategy, but the pitlane was closed by race stewards, as Alpine mechanics had to recover their stricken car.
More to follow.
