(KRON) — The city of Oakland has made three big sweeps at homeless encampments. First on Martin Luther King Jr. Way, then in Mosswood Park, and most recently along East 12th Street.
Homeless advocates say around 190 people lived at the encampment on 12th Street. Harold Duffey, the city’s Acting Homeless Administrator, said that, in less than a week, many citizens from the 12th Street camp now have a roof over their heads.
“We had 70 individuals that were placed last week, just at east 12th Street,” Duffey said.

On Monday, homeless advocates like Needa Bee, the Executive Director of The Village in Oakland, told KRON4 that there wasn’t enough notice about the sweep and that housing wasn’t offered to everyone.
“They were supposed to spend three weeks [doing] it because they aren’t prepared to take on all these people,” Bee said.
Duffey, disagreed with The Village in Oakland, saying that outreach teams from the city were at the encampment six months before the sweep.
“We actually go out and do intervention before the crews actually show up,” Duffey said.

Duffey said that the work being done isn’t just about clearing land of tents and vehicles, it’s about finding permanent housing solutions for those who need it most.
“Get people into temporary housing for a year and while they are there, they will get counseling, they will get their paperwork ready to get ready to qualify for whatever services they qualify for as a pathway to long term affordable housing,” he said.
The three sweeps in Oakland were done using a $7.2 million state grant.
