Governor of As-Suwayda, Mustafa Bakour, submitted his resignation on Friday, May 23, without an official explanation.
The media office in the governorate of As-Suwayda confirmed to Enab Baladi that Bakour has resigned, without providing further details.
According to an Enab Baladi correspondent in As-Suwayda, the governor has remained at his residence in Damascus since yesterday.
On its part, the al-Raased network, which specializes in reporting news from the city, reported that Bakour submitted his resignation, citing an unnamed source from the governorate, and indicated that the resignation is still on the President’s desk for consideration.
The media office in the governorate stated to the official Alikhbaria channel that the resignation request came after months in which the governor used all diplomatic means and prioritized reason and wisdom in an attempt to mend the rift.
It was confirmed that the request for resignation came following the recent incident where the governor was detained and the governorate’s building was attacked by a group that is “outside the law.”
After the attack incident
Bakour’s resignation comes two days after an armed group attacked the governorate’s building, brandishing weapons at him.
In response to the incident, Bakour stated that enforcing the law and ensuring security in the province of As-Suwayda is a non-negotiable choice.
He added in statements to the government Alikhbaria channel that the state will work hand-in-hand with all patriotic citizens to ensure its stability.
He continued, “We will not tolerate any attempt to undermine security or interfere with state institutions, nor will we allow anyone to legitimize violence or chaos under any pretext.”
According to a statement from the Director of Public Relations at the Ministry of Defense, Ali al-Rifai, which Enab Baladi obtained a copy of, an armed group “outside the law” stormed the governorate’s building with the intent of extracting someone named Raghib Qarqout, who was convicted of multiple car thefts before the downfall of the previous Syrian regime and while he was in Damascus.
Al-Rifai added that the group was led by Fadi Nasr, with support from Tariq al-Nagoush and others, coinciding with the presence of Governor Dr. Mustafa Bakour and some employees in the building.
The attackers brandished their firearms at the governor, employees, and the guards of the building after they closed the doors, allegedly demanding the illegal release of someone detained in a car theft case, who is related to them.
“Under the pressure of armed threat and the severity of the situation, the convicted individual was released,” al-Rifai stated, “noting that the same group is involved in similar theft incidents.”
Following the incident, national forces from As-Suwayda intervened, led by Liwa al-Jabal, which worked to expel the lawless group. The Men of Dignity movement was mobilized and worked to secure the governor’s exit from the location, according to a statement from the Director of Media Relations.
Al-Rifai firmly asserted, “Enforcing the law and ensuring security in the province of As-Suwayda is a non-negotiable choice,” and added, “We will work hand in hand with all patriotic citizens to ensure its stability.”
The Director of the al-Raased network, Diaa al-Sehnaoui, stated to Enab Baladi earlier that the families of the attackers returned and apologized to Governor Mustafa Bakour, who affirmed his desire to prevent matters in As-Suwayda from deteriorating further.
Al-Sehnaoui quoted the governor saying after the incident, “I do not want blood to be shed in As-Suwayda. I waive my right so that problems do not arise.”
The city of As-Suwayda has unique security and military circumstances, as an agreement was reached between the Syrian government and local factions whereby the latter assumed internal affairs and judicial enforcement under the supervision of the state.
