Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze put together a top-10 class in 2025, and his coaching peers across the SEC took notice.
In anonymous comments made to Athlon Sports, several coaches around the league expressed support for the job Freeze did this offseason in retrofitting the Auburn roster. Several told Athlon that Auburn finally has a quarterback that looks capable of executing Freeze’s offense and, as a result, the Tigers have turnaround potential this fall.
“Watch out here — they finally have a quarterback who can run [Hugh] Freeze’s system, and they’ve done some really impressive work in the portal,” said one coach to Athlon. “They’re not an elite team by any stretch, but this is the most complete roster Freeze has put together since he got there.”
Auburn signed a top-10 high school class, headlined by a quartet of top-100 prospects on the defensive side of the football and a 5-star quarterback. But that young passer will likely have to wait his turn because Freeze also landed Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold, a former 5-star in his own right.
“They finally have a quarterback, honestly. [Jackson] Arnold is not a world-beater, you can rattle him, but he’s a Day 1 upgrade, and the receiving room is really deep,” another coach told Athlon. “The Georgia Tech kid [Eric Singleton Jr.] is a legit baller and a big get.”
Arnold and Singleton were 2 of the top-rated transfers in a class that ran 19 deep. Auburn also added a pair of transfer tackles who could both win starting jobs in fall camp. According to the 247 Composite, the transfer class ranked eighth in the country.
“This offense is going to be better, and that’s going to help that defense a lot more,” a coach told Athlon. “[DJ] Durkin’s done a really good job with these guys, and it’s what kept them in a lot of their games last year.”
Auburn finished 5-7 last year, marking the fourth straight season with a losing record for the program. No coach in Auburn history has opened their tenure with 3 consecutive losing seasons. But that possibility faces Freeze in 2025 unless the Tigers take a step forward.
Freeze recently set a clear expectation that it’s a bowl-or-bust season on the Plains. His peers seem to think he’ll clear that bar.
Said one coach: “I think this is a turnaround year for these guys, and they’re definitely bowling.”
