Patients to see prescriptions transferred to rival pharmacy chain after Rite Aid bankruptcy sparks over 100 closures

RITE Aid customers will no longer have to worry about the fate of their prescriptions.

The pharmacy chain filed for its second bankruptcy earlier in May.

It first went under in October 2023, citing around $8.6 million in debt.

While it seeks to restructure and emerge again, it was confirmed that there would be closures of more than 100 stores nationwide.

Ahead of the filing, Rite Aid operated 1,240 locations in 15 states.

Consumers who frequented the locations for necessary prescriptions were left in a difficult spot over the past few weeks.

While Rite Aid said it was committed to transferring the prescriptions of those affected to other pharmacies to avoid disruptions in care, it hoped that most would hold off on doing so.

It argued that the sudden transfers could lead to those competing chains and retailers being severely “inundated with requests,” as noted in court documents.

Rite Aid predicted subsequent backups and delays amid a struggle to “efficiently” process orders.

“Those pharmacies must receive legal prescriptions, integrate them into their systems, acquire a sufficient supply of medication to fill the prescriptions, and be staffed to handle the additional prescriptions,” the pharmacy chain said in the filing.

    “This is no small task.”

    TRANSFER INTITIATED

Despite Rite Aid’s concerns, a New Jersey judge ruled this week that the prescription files in jeopardy due to the bankruptcy will be transferred to competitors such as CVS, Walgreens, and other retailers, per USA Today.

The update comes after Rite Aid confirmed on May 15 that it “successfully entered into a series of sale agreements and pharmacy services transition agreements.”

That means assets from around 1,000 Rite Aid stores will be transferred.

Along with CVS and Walgreens, other stores that will get prescriptions include Albertsons, Kroger, and Giant Eagle.

Select Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs stores (owned by Rite Aid) will also begin operating under CVS.

    CVS TO THE RESCUE

In total, CVS is set to acquire the prescriptions from 625 Rite Aid pharmacies and obtain 64 stores.

CVS also emphasized a “seamless” transition for Rite Aid customers.

Walgreens’ total prescription takeover is unclear, but it comes from Rite Aid stores in at least nine states, according to what a spokesperson told the publication.

Customer prescription files are listed for up to 810 stores for all the buyers noted in the bankruptcy documents.

Rite Aid also detailed that stores will stay open and customers can continue to access pharmacy services like refills and immunizations.

    CEO STATEMENT

Matt Schroeder, CEO of Rite Aid, emphasized that the company was putting its customers first amid the closures and bankruptcy proceedings.

“A key priority for Rite Aid is to ensure that as many of our loyal customers as possible continue to receive the pharmacy services and care they require without interruption,” Schroeder noted in a statement.

“These agreements ensure our pharmacy customers will experience a smooth transition while preserving jobs for some of our valued team members.”

Walgreens is notably in the middle of its own wave of store closures this year.

CVS is also closing at least 23 additional locations in the same state.
