Death Valley cast, filming locations and episode guide for BBC crime drama

A retired actor and a disarming young detective would make the perfect crime-fighting duo – if only they could get along.

Death Valley explores exactly what happens when the pair are thrown together in this new crime drama for BBC One.

Written and created by Paul Doolan and set in Wales, Death Valley follows the unlikely crime-solving partnership between eccentric national treasure and retired actor John Chapel (Timothy Spall) and Welsh detective sergeant Janie Mallowan (Gwyneth Keyworth).

Chapel played a television detective during his career and Mallowan is his number one fan.

Doolan said he was inspired to create the show because it “was that classic thing of writing what you wish was on TV. I’m a huge murder mystery fan and a massive comedy fan but felt that you hardly see them combined in a satisfying way.”

DS Janie Mallowan is an ambitious detective desperate to solve the big cases and progress her career. While investigating the death by apparent suicide of wealthy property developer Carwyn Rees, she meets her television detective hero John Chapel.

He is now retired and something of a reclusive. But he has used his insight into character to deduce that his neighbour Carwyn was murdered. Although Janie is initially sceptical of his conclusions, when forensics prove his theory right she asks him to help with the case.

And so begins the most unlikely of crime-fighting duos.

Spall described his character, John Chapel, as a ” bearded recluse who has become a bit of a curmudgeon described by one of the locals as a ‘grumpy old bastard”.

The 68-year-old has starred in a multitude of major films including Secrets & Lies, Topsy-Turvy, Mr Turner, Hamlet, The Damned United, The King’s Speech and the Harry Potter movies.

On television, he is known for his roles in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, Summer of Rockets and The Sixth Commandment, for which he won a Bafta.

Keyworth said of her character, Janie Mallowan: “She is enthusiastic at work, but her private life is shut down. She suffered quite a big loss just after finishing school and she hasn’t really recovered from it.

“She doesn’t have a social life and her whole existence is for work. But she is also upbeat and quirky!”

The Welsh actress is best known for her roles in the sitcom The Great Outdoors and sci-fi comedy Misfits. She has also appeared in The Crown, Game of Thrones, Power Monkeys, Lost Boys and Fairies and Wasted. She also played Evelyn Anders in the Alex Rider series.

Death Valley was filmed on location in Wales last summer. The seaside town of Penarth, just outside Cardiff, was one of the main backdrops for the show.

Known for its waterfront and Victorian pier overlooking the Bristol Channel, it served as the location for a crime scene and the home of one of the main characters.

Not only was the landmark pier captured on film, so was the local Brod Bakery last July. A report in the Penarth Times said Spall was “spotted in the centre of Penarth during a break in filming”.

Filming also took place in the historic town of Llantwit Major, in the Vale of Glamorgan. Insole Court in Llandaff, a large Victorian mansion located in Cardiff, provided a Gothic-style setting for some of the scenes.
