The investigation will continue Friday into why a Cessna 550 plunged into a Murphy Canyon neighborhood, apparently killing all six people aboard the plane, but, thanks to fast action on the part of first responders and neighbors, no one on the ground.

Here’s a rundown of what we know:

Casualties – As of Friday, six are apparently dead, including talent agency co-founder Dave Shapiro, but authorities have only identified three of the six aboard the small jet that had been headed to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport.

Impact in neighborhood – Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board said the Cessna hit power lines roughly two miles southeast of the airport. Once the plane plummeted into the 3100 block of Salmon Street, it left one home with severe fire damage and a collapsed roof. At least 10 other residences were damaged, authorities said, along with several vehicles that were mangled and destroyed.

Residents mostly spared – Though many fled the fire with just the clothes on the their backs, just eight were treated for smoke inhalation and injuries that were not life-threatening, including a person who was hurt climbing out a window, a San Diego police officer said. One woman, Ariya Waterworth, said she woke up and saw a giant fireball outside. Firefighters helped her escape with her children amid plane parts and debris that littered her yard. “I definitely do feel blessed, because we’ve been spared,” she said.

Quote of the day: “I can’t quite put words to describe what the scene looks like, but with the jet fuel going down the street, and everything on fire all at once, it was pretty horrific to see,” San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said.

What’s next – Authorities are expected to name other victims on Friday. The National Transportation Safety Board has begun its investigation and a preliminary report is expected to be released in about two weeks.
