Amazon Prime cancels hit drama after 3 seasons despite once being named streamer’s ‘top 5 series launches of all time’

AMAZON Prime fantasy drama The Wheel Of Time will not be renewed for a fourth season, according to reports.

Fans will be devastated to hear that the popular show is apparently being canceled due to “financial” reasons.

Deadline states that bosses at the streaming giant had “lengthy deliberations” over the future of the show before making the decision.

After speaking to sources, the publication says, “The Season 3 overall performance was not strong enough compared to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season and the streamer could not make it work after examining different scenarios and following discussions with lead studio Sony TV.”

The Wheel Of Time is an adaptation of the book series of the same name by authors Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.

It stars Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred, an Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah who is searching for the Dragon Reborn.

The Academy Award nominee also acted as a producer on the show and only recently was singing its praises about the cast.

Daniel Henney plays Moiraine’s Warder and companion al’Lan Mandragoran in the show.

The Wheel Of Time made its debut in November 2021 on the streaming giant and quickly captivated audiences around the world.

Six months before it had even dropped on Amazon Prime, execs predicted it would be a hit and commissioned a second season.

Again, the show was renewed for third season in July 2022 – more than a year before the second season even aired.

In March this year, fans excitedly tuned into the streamer for the third season – but apparently the viewership had slipped compared to the previous instalments.

Despite this, the global performer ranked as Number 1 on Prime Video in multiple countries and received a host of positive reviews.

In March, Rosamund could not hide her excitement at the show’s return and its cast.

Speaking to Geeks Of Color, the English actress said, “Well, the exciting thing is that we’ve been able to offer a whole host of really marvelous actors in some really exciting roles this season.

“So, as the world expands, we got to draw on a really global talent base for some really key characters, which I’m really excited for everyone to meet.”

Rosamund also touched upon the financial cost of producing the show and seemed confident that the budget was spent wisely, with a trip to South Africa included for season three.

The show had only previously been shot in Europe, including the Czech Republic, Croatia and Slovenia.

The Wheel Of Time also used CGI to create some of the incredible fantasy landscapes.

Speaking about season three, Rosamund added, “You’ll come to the Aiel Waste, and you’ll meet Nukâka [Coster-Waldau], and you’ll meet Björn…that I think has been the pleasure.

“Expanding the world. And finding we know how to spend our budget better and more competitively.

“And we were able to go to South Africa and find stunning locations and get a fantastic crew.”

Season three of The Wheel Of Time achieved an impressive score of 97 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Yet it still appears to have been given the chop.

According to Deadline, Prime Video and Sony TV will continue to back the Emmy campaign for The Wheel of Time‘s third season despite it being axed.
