Vanderbilt strikes out 17 en route to dominant win over Oklahoma

Vanderbilt advanced to the semifinals of the SEC Baseball Tournament on Thursday night.

The Commodores defeated Oklahoma 6-1 and will now face rival Tennessee in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Vanderbilt turned in a dominant pitching performance against the Sooners led by starter JD Thompson.

Thompson threw 5 innings of 1-run ball, striking out 11 Sooners en route to the win. He allowed just 2 hits and 3 walks on the night. Thompson faced 22 batters, meaning he struck out half of the hitters he faced against Oklahoma.

Vanderbilt’s bullpen came in and slammed the door over the final 4 frames. The bullpen didn’t allow any hits while striking out 6 more batters to close out the game.

Offensively, Vanderbilt stacked 8 hits together to help earn the win. The Commodores were able to push 6 runs across the board without any homers on the night thanks to some timely hitting. The big inning came in the 3rd when Vandy scored 4 runs in-part because of an Oklahoma error. But RJ Austin also delivered a clutch 2-run double and had a team-high 3 RBI on the night.

Vandy will face Tennessee in one semifinal on Saturday. These teams met just a couple of weeks ago in Knoxville, with Vanderbilt winning 2 out of 3.
