Veteran Team India seamer Mohammed Shami is reportedly expected to miss the highly anticipated five-match Test series against England. According to recent reports, the BCCI senior selection committee is unlikely to consider him for selection, as his ability to bowl long spells is a concern in Tests.
Mohammed Shami last played a Test match during the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final against Australia. He underwent ankle surgery and was ruled out of the entire 2023–25 WTC cycle. Notably, there were hopes of his comeback for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024–25 in Australia.
The selectors picked Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, and Prasidh Krishna as supporting bowlers to Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj during the tour of Australia, where the team suffered a 1-3 defeat despite winning the first Test in Perth.
Shami returned to the Indian national team during the white-ball series against England. The pacer was also part of India's winning campaign in the 2025 Champions Trophy in the UAE.
However, he struggled with his performances for SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2025. Shami managed just six wickets in nine games at an average of 56.17 and an economy rate of 11.23. His performances have raised doubts about his effectiveness ahead of the Test series against England.
Mohammed Shami Not an Automatic Selection for England Test Series
According to a report by The Indian Express, Mohammed Shami is unlikely to be part of India’s squad for the Test series in England. The BCCI’s medical team has informed the board that the 34-year-old pacer is not in a position to bowl long spells and cannot play all five matches.
The report also mentioned that there were internal discussions about including Shami for a few games. However, with Jasprit Bumrah already indicating that he can manage only three Tests due to workload concerns, the selectors are hesitant to pick another bowler with similar limitations.
The selectors are leaning toward choosing only fully fit pacers who can consistently bowl long spells throughout the series.
“Shami is bowling four overs in IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad but the board and selectors don’t know whether he can bowl more than 10 overs in a day. Test matches in England may demand longer spells from the pacers and we can’t take chances,” a source said.
Mohammed Shami Has Taken 42 Wickets in 14 Tests for India in England
Mohammed Shami has been a key part of India’s pace attack in England for about ten years. Over the last three England tours and two World Test Championship Finals, he has taken 42 wickets in 14 Tests at an average of 40.50. However, the pacer has yet to take a five-wicket haul in England.
Team India now faces the challenge of building a strong seam bowling lineup for the upcoming series. There has been discussion among fans and experts about including left-arm pacers such as Khaleel Ahmed, Arshdeep Singh, or Yash Dayal, but the final decision on the squad remains uncertain.
