After 9 to 5 Sequel With Original Stars Never Happened, Dolly Parton Delivers Her Candid Thoughts on Jennifer Anistons New Version

The news of Jennifer Aniston spearheading a remake of the iconic 1980 comedy 9 to 5 has buzzed through Hollywood, leaving fans with one major question: what do the original leading ladies think, and could they be involved? Now, Dolly Parton, one-third of the unforgettable trio, has broken her silence, revealing a long-held wish for a sequel and offering her perspective on the fresh take.

For years, the possibility of seeing Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin reprise their roles as Doralee Rhodes, Judy Bernly, and Violet Newstead has been a hot topic. Parton confirmed these efforts during a recent HuffPost interview, painting a picture of a sequel that, despite their best intentions, remained elusive. “Jane, Lily and I have been trying for years to try to come up with a 9 to 5: Two through the years,” Parton told HuffPost. The outcome of those efforts? “It never happened.”

With that history in mind, Parton directly addressed whether she and her original co-stars would be part of Aniston's new vision. “But we have no plans to be in that,” she stated, a comment that might initially seem to distance the beloved trio from the upcoming project. However, Parton quickly pivoted, making her feelings about Aniston's endeavor clear and offering a surprising level of support for the new direction.

“But I do wish her the best," Parton told the outlet, "because the script I read, I thought, was really good and a new and different take that really brings the office up to date the way that people live now.” The original 9 to 5 was more than just a hit movie; it was a cultural phenomenon that spurred conversations about workplace equality and harassment, themes that sadly still resonate today.

With her characteristic humor, Parton also touched upon the passage of time and the visual aspect of a potential return for the original cast. “But I think a lot of it is that, you know, we’re all older now,” she quipped. “We’re not gonna look that good on the big screen. All of us up there with all those beautiful, young, fresh people ... so I don’t know.”

While an onscreen reunion might not be in the cards, Parton’s could still be part of the remake. She revealed an offer made to Aniston, with whom she shares a friendly relationship. “I told her, I said, you’re more than welcome to use my song ‘9 to 5,’ and if you need some additional songs, or if you need the ‘9 to 5’ song rewritten or reworked, you know, to do that,” Parton explained.

As for who might fill her iconic, blonde-wigged role of Doralee, Parton is optimistic, even if she doesn't have a specific name to offer. “But I’m sure that they’ll find some great person. I don’t have any one myself in mind for it, but there’s somebody ― there’s a [Doralee] out there,” the Grammy winner shared with confidence.

While fans might have initially hoped for a direct sequel featuring the original powerhouse trio, Parton's insightful and encouraging words suggest that the spirit of 9 to 5 is in good hands with Jennifer Aniston, potentially with a touch of Dolly's musical magic to guide it.
