Though many consider Black Sabbath and Judas Priest as the pioneers of heavy metal, Deep Purple also helped develop the harder, louder and more aggressive sound of rock in the late 1960s and '70s.
Look no further than Black Sabbath's Born Again for proof of Deep Purple's heavy metal credentials. It's the only album the metal icons recorded with Deep Purple's vocalist Ian Gillan, who replaced Ronnie James Dio (who himself replaced original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne).
Actually, maybe don't play that album. When speaking to Rolling Stone Brasil, Ian said, "If you've seen the movie This is Spinal Tap, that's the story of Born Again."
The 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap lampooned heavy metal. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer portrayed the titular band as they experienced a comedy of errors while on tour across America.

Gillan told Rolling Stone Brasil that he thought the songs on Born Again are "great" but that the album's mixing was "ridiculous" because "all you could hear was the bass."
"The bass level was so high that you couldn't play it on the radio," he added. "It was just after the advent of digital music. So people were still using needles. And it was impossible. I have a cassette tape with a mix of the feedback that sounds 10 times better than the album."

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi revealed in May 2024 his plans to remix Born Again, according to Metal Injection. Iommi went on SiriusXM's Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk to say that the delay in remixing the album was due to them misplacing the original recordings for years. But they found the tapes and were working on a listenable version.
"There are some songs on there that I really think are great," Gillan told RS Brasil. "It's always a joy to write with Tony, and we certainly had a lot of fun making the record. It was a fantastic time…But overall, thank God they're going to remix it."
