An Alabama jury convicted Bobby Cherry of taking part in the Ku Klux Klan’s 1963 bombing of a Birmingham church that killed four girls. Cherry received four life sentences — one for each slaying. In 2004, he died in prison.
Thomas Blanton, who was convicted in May 2001 as a conspirator in the case and received four life sentences, also died in prison in June 2020. Robert Chambliss, known as “Dynamite Bob,”was convicted in 1977 and died in prison eight years later. The last suspect, Herman Cash, died in 1994 and was never tried.
