Since President Trump entered office in January of 2025, our border security has increased, the flow of illegal drugs has dropped dramatically, and illegal border crossings have plummeted to levels not seen in modern history. The success of the Trump administration’s leadership at our borders cannot be underestimated. Now, Congress must do its job to enshrine into law the work of President Trump.
House Republicans are working to fund President Trump’s successful border security agenda. I am proud that the Committee on Homeland Security recently advanced recommendations for the budget reconciliation process to fund important border security priorities, including adequate personnel funding, wall construction and investments in technology.
During the Biden border crisis, I visited the Southwest border several times with my Republican colleagues to see the chaos firsthand. We heard directly from Border Patrol agents about the resources they needed to gain control of our borders.
Now, as the chairman of the Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement, we are working closely with the Trump administration to fund border security in the House budget reconciliation process. President Trump has listened to the needs of the frontline law enforcement officers who were long ignored by the Biden administration. Congressional Republicans are united in ensuring Border Patrol agents’ voices are heard and they have the resources they need to fulfill their important mission and keep Americans safe.
The Biden-Harris border crisis has finally come to an end, though we will be working to undo the consequences for years. Illegal crossings at the Southwest border in March plummeted 95 percent from the previous March. However, the success at our borders won’t last if we don’t provide the necessary resources to help Customs and Border Protection (CBP) fulfill its mission.
Physical barriers play a critical role in ensuring that our borders are secure. Completed sections of the border wall have been a proven, effective tool for Border Patrol agents to prevent illegal crossings. That’s why the proposal advanced by committee Republicans allocated $46.5 billion to fund over 700 new miles of border wall and invest in the continued modernization of the border barrier system.
Another important component of the committee’s recommendations is upgrading the facilities for the U.S. Border Patrol. Many facilities are in remote areas, with deteriorating structures, limited space, outdated technology and insufficient capacity to support current staffing levels. Investing in physical infrastructure is not just about modernization, it’s about mission effectiveness, safety and demonstrating commitment from Congress to those who risk their lives to secure our borders.
While ensuring our frontline personnel have the proper facilities is critical, we must also make certain that the CBP is adequately staffed. The Biden-Harris administration destroyed Border Patrol agents’ morale and increased attrition throughout CBP by failing to enforce the law. Now that President Trump has returned them to their frontline border security mission, our committee has proposed funding to add thousands of new agents and CBP officers, bolster recruitment and training efforts, and fund retention bonuses.
As CBP personnel on the frontlines work to clean up the worst border crisis in American history, Congress must make strategic investments to procure cutting-edge border security technology. As technology that protects our officers and serves as a force multiplier continues to evolve, our proposed funding invests in advanced surveillance technology along the Southwest, Northern and Maritime borders. This technology is essential to maintaining situational awareness, closing critical security gaps, and enhancing the safety of frontline personnel and our communities.
This funding is vital to ensuring President Trump can keep his most important promise to the American people: securing the border.
