Opening of a health center serving 25,000 people in Hama

The Health Directorate in Hama governorate opened the Tal Sakin al-Sarout health center in western Hama on Wednesday, May 21.

Hama Health Director, Nazih al-Ghaoui, stated to Enab Baladi that the center serves a wide segment of the residents of Tal Sakin village and neighboring villages, approximately 25,000 people.

The center is “vital” as it is the only one in the area, reducing the burden on patients who previously had to travel to Hama city for medical services, according to al-Ghaoui.

Al-Ghaoui added that the center includes various specializations, such as general medicine, obstetrics, community and reproductive health, family planning, and nutrition, in addition to a pharmacy and a dental clinic.

Efforts will also be made to staff the center with various specialists, including internal medicine and pediatric doctors, according to al-Ghaoui.

The Hama Health Director mentioned that the directorate is working on a plan to open additional health centers in the northern Hama countryside and the al-Ghab Plain, with engineering plans already prepared for multiple centers.

    Previous struggles

Most of the residents who spoke to Enab Baladi during the center’s opening mentioned their struggles in traveling from Hama villages to the city center for medical services.

The opening of the center is considered a “positive step” that alleviates the high costs of treatment and travel fees to the city.

The head of Tal Sakin al-Sarout village, Issa al-Haidar, told Enab Baladi that the center was built through a popular initiative by the village’s residents during the previous Syrian regime, but it did not receive the necessary attention and was not equipped with medical supplies and devices.

Regarding the challenges the center faces post-opening, pediatrician and former head of the Tal Sakin center, Ali al-Issa, explained to Enab Baladi that there are several facilities needed for the center to provide effective services to citizens, such as a solar energy system to supply it with electricity.

The center also requires staffing with specialized personnel, like an obstetrician and a midwife.

Al-Issa mentioned that the center includes various departments, including (pharmacy, reproductive health, well-child clinic, dental clinic, laboratory, and examination room).

The center is ready to handle emergencies and provide medications, serving seven surrounding villages of Tal Sakin.

The opening of the Tal Sakin medical center is part of a series of health projects announced by the Ministry of Health, aimed at expanding medical services in rural areas and meeting the growing needs of residents by providing healthcare that addresses their needs and alleviates the burdens of traveling to urban centers for treatment.
