Busra al-Sham National Hospital suspends operations for security reasons

The staff of the Busra al-Sham National Hospital in Daraa announced a statement suspending its medical services and decided to withdraw due to the security situation in the area, alongside the employment conditions of its workers.

In the statement published on Monday, May 19, the reasons for halting operations were attributed to the lack of security protection for the medical and administrative staff in the hospital, as well as the repeated attacks faced by the staff from some residents.

The statement considered the uncertainty regarding the fate of the hospital employees, as they are not listed with the Syrian Ministry of Health, as another reason for the suspension of work.

Awad al-Miqdad, one of the hospital’s administrators, told Enab Baladi that the staff members are demanding official employment and recognition as a government entity, in addition to ensuring the hospital’s security from residents’ infringements and thefts.

He added that the staff is requesting the provision of equipment and medications to avoid clashes with residents.

Al-Miqdad also mentioned that the revolution produced this staff, which has worked voluntarily over the past years, and now requires official recognition to avoid legal accountability in case of any medical or security mishap.

Following the issuance of the statement, the General Security Service responded by deploying a security detachment to protect the hospital, without any immediate change in the status of its workers, according to Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa.

Unnamed governmental entities requested that services continue until the end of the workday on Thursday and promised that the government would consider the fate of the hospital staff during this period.

The staff of Busra al-Sham Hospital numbers 65 employees, including doctors, nurses, technicians, and administrators.

Currently, there is no alternative capable of covering the services provided by the hospital, according to al-Miqdad.

Busra al-Sham National Hospital serves nearly 100,000 residents of the city and neighboring villages and is considered one of the most important hospitals in the governorate, according to al-Miqdad.

The hospital previously received support from the Eighth Brigade, which was in control of Busra al-Sham, but dissolved itself under pressure from the Ministry of Defense last April.

The General Security besieged the city of Busra at that time, following the assassination of the leader Bilal al-Miqdad; after negotiations, General Security Forces entered the city, deployed several checkpoints, activated the Busra police station, and ended the control of the Eighth Brigade over the area.

There are seven public hospitals in Daraa governorate, and 13 private hospitals, which lack support and suffer from a shortage of medical staff, especially after most doctors emigrated. Some have contracted with private hospitals, pushing some residents to go directly to private hospitals for the availability of equipment and staff.
