Times of San Diego greatly expands its coverage Wednesday by adding seven trusted community newspapers to its website, bringing readers hyperlocal news and information from across San Diego County. The website continues to be free to the public.
The San Diego Community Newspaper Group is now a part of NEWSWELL, which also operates Times of San Diego. NEWSWELL, a nonprofit based at Arizona State University, was founded to build innovative solutions that help local newsrooms and communities thrive.
A 2024 American Journalism Project study found San Diegans have a strong desire for more local news about and for their communities.
The group’s bi-weekly and monthly newspapers cover downtown and midtown San Diego; La Jolla; La Mesa and Mt. Helix; Mission Valley and the Mission area; Pacific Beach; Point Loma; and the San Diego State University area. The titles include La Jolla Village News, Beach & Bay Press, Peninsula Beacon, Uptown News, Downtown News, Mission Times Courier, and La Mesa Courier.
Publisher Julie Main, who is joining the NEWSWELL team, described the transition as a “natural fit” that builds on her group’s nearly 40 years of experience serving San Diego readers.
“This combination brings the best of both worlds — Times of San Diego’s strong digital presence and audience, combined with our hyperlocal print coverage,” she said. “It’s a natural fit that expands the depth and breadth of content available to readers across the region.”
Coverage from all seven newspapers is accessible now on Times of San Diego from the home page, timesofsandiego.com, the Times’ daily newsletter and in seven new community newsletters launching this week. The newspapers will continue to be printed and distributed under their longstanding print brands.
NEWSWELL offers operational services and business strategies to local nonprofit news sites. Local San Diego journalists provide the reporting and editing.
Chris Jennewein, who founded Times of San Diego 11 years ago and serves as editor and general manager, said the expanded team will enable the news site to offer close-to-home coverage in many communities while continuing to provide breaking metro and state news.
“The addition of these newspapers is the next step in the growth of Times of San Diego, which already has the largest audience of any independent nonprofit news site in San Diego County,” he said. “We’re fortunate to be able to work with Julie and her respected editorial and sales teams.”
The combination will allow advertisers and sponsors to reach customers in printed newspapers, hyperlocal websites and neighborhood newsletters, with the Number Six agency coordinating advertising and sponsorship packages between all products and offering full digital marketing services to local businesses and organizations.
Times of San Diego is nonpartisan and nonprofit. It recently received a two-year, $300,000 grant from the Prebys Foundation to support increased local news coverage.
Main promised her readers the move will ensure local communities continue to get the news that matters and noted additional coverage will be available online.
“I’m grateful for the trust our readers and advertisers have placed in us,” she said, “and I’m excited about this new chapter with Times of San Diego – working together to grow our reach and continue delivering news that truly matters.”
