Molly Ringwald Makes Surprising Confession About Filming Iconic 80s Movie

It may have been four years since The Breakfast Clubhit theaters in 1985 and changed the way the teen movie genre was defined forever, but the film and its soundtrack continue to live on.

Speaking of the movie's iconic soundtrack, it could have been totally different if not for Molly Ringwald, 57, who played "the princess" Claire Standish introducing director John Hughes to Simple Minds, the band behind the song "Don't You (Forget About Me)."

Ringwald opened up about hearing the song for the first time in a trailer for a new documentary about the band, Simple Minds: Everything Is Possible, which was premiered by People on May 21.

She described listening to the band for the first time as "almost like an obscene phone call — like, in a good way," and loved their music enough she brought it up while making The Breakfast Club.

“I think I recommended them to John Hughes," she said. "I like to take a little responsibility for that.”

Ringwald is right to take credit where credit is due — after all, it's impossible to think of The Breakfast Club without also thinking of the Simple Minds song. How differently would we remember the movie if Ringwald had never introduced the band's music to Hughes?

For more from Ringwald on the band's impact, you can check out Simple Minds: Everything Is Possible when the documentary hits theaters on June 13.
