‘Cuff and stuff me’ – Dave Portnoy duped by parody account reporting fake story about Angel Reese and WNBA

Dave Portnoy revealed what he shouted at Angel Reese during the WNBA clash between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky.

The Barstool Sports founder quoted a fake news report on X that was shared by infamous parody account NBA Centel, which claimed the league is ‘considering banning fans from booing to create a safer emotional environment for visiting players.’

A screenshot of odds suggesting there is a 53 percent chance of the WNBA stopping fans from jeering players was also included in the post.

The spoof ‘Centel’ account — a parody of the legitimate ‘NBA Central’ page — has more than 620,000 followers on X.

It has gone viral in recent years for its fake news headlines which are often mistaken as facts by high-profile figures in basketball.

Portnoy, who earlier this month lamented a visibly distraught Jayson Tatum, is the latest to fall victim of its fake news, defending the comments he made towards Reese during the Fever-Sky game.

“To clarify, I yelled ‘Ball Don’t Lie’ when Angel missed the tech,” he wrote, quoting the fake news.

“WNBA wants to cuff and stuff me for it.”

Fans were quick notice his error, with many pointing out on X that he had been ‘Centel’d’.

“It’s hilarious how many people fall for a parody handle,” one fan responded.

“Centel is pretty good, but still a pretty bad look,” another said.

“Dave. This isn’t real, this is a troll page buddy,” a third wrote.

Portnoy’s post came in the aftermath of a controversial season-opening game between the Fever and the Sky, which has seen the WNBA investigate allegations of racist comments aimed at Reese.

It’s unclear when the alleged incident happened, but the Fever confirmed on Sunday that they are ‘aware of the allegations of inappropriate fan conduct’ during the game, which Indiana won 93-58.

Tensions boiled over on the court in the third quarter, when Reese clashed with Caitlin Clark.

The incident unfolded when Reese grabbed an offensive rebound and Clark slapped her opponent’s arm hard enough to jar the ball loose and knock Reese to floor.

When Reese got up, she tried to confront Clark before Fever center Aliyah Boston stepped in between the two stars.

Clark’s third personal foul was upgraded to a flagrant 1, while Boston and Reese each drew technicals following a replay review by the referees.

While both players downplayed the incident, the WNBA said it was investigating reports of ‘hateful’ abuse directed towards Reese, who also made WNBA history during game.

“The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms – they have no place in our league or in society,” the league said in a statement.

“We are aware of the allegations and are looking into the matter.”

The Fever and Sky will play four more times in the regular season, with their next game set for Saturday, June 7 in Chicago.
