Tyson Fury’s nutritionist Greg Marriott believes the heavyweight’s camps to face Oleksandr Usyk were ‘overcomplicated’.
Fury was beaten for the first time and second time in his career by Usyk in May and December respectively last year, losing twice to points decisions.
The ‘Gypsy King’ was adamant he did enough to win both fights, but was left empty-handed and retired from the sport.
Fury made changes from the first fight to the second fight including his corner, as well as piling on 20lbs to try and use his size advantages.
But ultimately he came up short, and his father John Fury has recently opened up and criticised his preparations.
Fury Sr was adamant that his son should have been in better physical conditioning to have the best chance of battling past Usyk.
That has been echoed by Fury’s food expert Marriott, who believes he should have beaten Usyk had preparations been up to scratch.
He told Seconds Out: “I think what has happened in that camp, they overcomplicated things.
“Instead of making him super fit, they made things too complex. He should have never have lost against Usyk.
“It shouldn’t have even been close, because he is that good. But my voice will only go so far in camp.
“I just think for that camp, I didn’t like what I saw. I just thought this is getting overcomplicated and it came to fruition in the ring.
“He should have just been super fit and made to go do his thing. The standard needed to go up for Usyk.
AFPAnd Marriot believes Fury’s camps cost him the victories[/caption]“That camp for me was 60 per cent for Fury for the rematch. And he only just come unstuck.”
Fury insisted immediately after the contest that he’d done all he could to earn the judges’ backing on the scorecards.
But he fell short and his extremely frustrated reaction indicated he wasn’t pleased with the result.
The ‘Gypsy King’ looks in great shape right now despite being in retirement, keeping fit in the gym.
He has even posted training footage and teased a potential U-turn on his decision to hang up the gloves.
Fury recently called out Usyk for a trilogy in front of the British fans, a first with the opening two meetings held in Saudi Arabia.
John Fury's verdict on Fury vs Usyk
“He’s got to spend time on his physique,” Fury Sr said. “Forget the boxing.
“He needs 12 months on his physique to get some muscle on his frame.
“What’s letting him down is his physical condition.
“His lack of muscle. His lack of body strength and his lack of power, because they’re not using the muscles and working the muscles you need at that level.
“If you’re fighting at an undisputed world level, you’ve got to train like an absolute titan and if you’re not going to do that, stay retired.
“The result’s going to be the same. He’s got tons left in the tank. This man could come back and win that belt three times over, but not with a crowd around him.”
It is clear he could be open to a return, but will likely wait for the outcome of Usyk’s undisputed rematch with Dubois on July 19 first.
A showdown with Anthony Joshua could also be on the cards if he elects to make a full return.
