Top-Selling Toyota RAV4 to Go Fully Hybrid in Major Redesign

The Toyota RAV4 has established itself as a formidable player in the automotive market, currently ranking as America's best-selling non-pickup truck. The impending redesign of the 2026 RAV4 signifies a strategic pivot towards a fully hybrid powertrain, aligning with industry trends favoring sustainability and efficiency . This transition is expected to mirror the successful implementation seen in the Camry’s hybrid variant, which utilizes a 2.5-liter inline-four engine generating between 225-232 horsepower. Furthermore, the continued existence of the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid variant suggests that Toyota aims to cater to diverse consumer preferences while enhancing overall performance and refinement .

The world’s largest automaker said the 2026 Toyota RAV4 only will be offered as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, eliminating a traditional gas engine in the vehicle for the first time. It will still have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, but with hybrid technologies such as batteries and electric motors.

Despite a slower-than-expected adoption of all-electric vehicles, automakers have looked to hybrid models — which combine electric vehicle technologies with traditional internal combustion engines — to increase performance and help them meet fuel economy regulations.

The 2026 RAV4 Core features a modern design with a sleek, paint-matched grille and Toyota's signature hammerhead front end. Wide overfenders with black cladding and chiseled body panels accentuate its SUV profile. Wheel sizes range from 17 to 20 inches, depending on the LE, XLE, or Limited grade.

The Rugged design is exclusive to the new standalone Woodland model, an outdoor-focused grade. It boasts a raised hammerhead front end, a black split grille with integrated Rigid Industries LED lighting, and a half-inch lift thanks to standard All-Terrain tires. Standard raised roof rails with crossbars and a 1¼-inch rear activity mount add to its travel-ready versatility. The Woodland grade includes standard AWD and is available with HEV or PHEV powertrains.

RAV4 sales rose 9.3% to almost 475,200 units last year, driven by significant growth in hybrid (29.3%) and plug-in hybrid (19.3%) models. Hybrids accounted for approximately half of all RAV4 sales.

Industry-wide, electrified vehicles (including hybrids and all-electric models) reached a record 20% of U.S. new car and truck sales, totaling 3.2 million units according to Motor Intelligence. This figure breaks down to 1.9 million hybrids (including plug-ins) and 1.3 million all-electric vehicles.

As anticipation builds for its debut later this year and subsequent availability by late 2025 at an estimated starting price of around $30,000 , consumers and industry analysts alike await further details regarding features and specifications. Ultimately, Toyota's commitment to transitioning the RAV4 into a fully hybrid model demonstrates not only its dedication to innovation but also its responsiveness to evolving consumer demands for environmentally friendly vehicles.
