The gas prices for Memorial Day weekend are expected to be the cheapest, when adjusted for inflation, in recent years.
The new analysis by GasBuddy, which was released on Tuesday, found that the national average price of gas will be $3.08 per gallon on Memorial Day, May 26, the cheapest rate at the gas station since 2021.
The prices over the summer, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, are projected to be $3.02 per gallon.
“While we’re forecasting the lowest summer gas prices in years, economic jitters are slightly dampening optimism — but we still expect a robust travel season, with millions of Americans hitting the road, many for extended trips,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a statement. “Rather than canceling plans, travelers are becoming more strategic with their spending.”
Nearly 70 percent of Americans plan to take a road trip this summer, a slightly lower amount than last summer, when 76 percent of respondents said the same.
The majority of Americans, 32 percent, intend to take two road trips this season, the survey found, with 40 percent anticipating driving at least five hours to get to their destination.
Around 45.1 million people are projected to travel a minimum of 50 miles from home during the Memorial Day period, according to AA. The figure represents an increase of about 1.4 million travelers in comparison to 2024 and breaks the record previously recorded in 2005 with 44 million travelers.
“While some travelers embark on dream vacations and fly hundreds of miles across the country, many families just pack up the car and drive to the beach or take a road trip to visit friends,” said Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel. “Long holiday weekends are ideal for travel because many people have an extra day off work and students are off from school.”
