While I’ve never been heavy into ‘art,’ I have been a content creator and marketing professional for nearly 15 years now. I’ve used a variety of tools for photo editing and graphic design, including drawing tablets. A touch-sensitive tablet can be a valuable device for content creation and when it can act as a second screen, it’s even better. That’s where the Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) fills a gap for people looking to up their design game.

About Kamvas 13 (Gen 3)

The HUION Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) is a versatile and lightweight pen display designed for artists, students, and content creators who need a reliable, high-performance tool for digital creativity. Featuring a 13.3-inch full HD IPS display with full lamination and a 2nd generation anti-glare etched glass surface, it delivers a natural drawing experience with precise pen control and vibrant color accuracy.

Powered by Huion’s Pentech 4.0 and the PW600L battery-free pen, it supports 16,384 levels of pressure sensitivity, ±60° tilt recognition, and exceptional accuracy across the screen. Dual USB-C ports provide flexible connectivity with PCs, Macs, Android devices, and Linux systems, while five customizable press keys, two dial controllers, and function buttons enhance workflow efficiency.

With a sleek profile, responsive display, and wide color gamut coverage (99% sRGB, 99% Rec.709, and 90% Adobe RGB), the Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) strikes a smart balance between portability, performance, and affordability—making it ideal for anyone looking to bring their digital artwork to life.

How It Compares to the Previous Generation

Compared to the Kamvas 13 (Gen 2), the Gen 3 offers several notable improvements:

Thinner and Lighter: Gen 3 is slimmer (11.7mm) and more portable (865g), ideal for creatives on the go. Improved Drawing Surface: Full lamination and 2nd-gen anti-glare etched glass reduce parallax and provide a more natural pen-on-paper feel. Enhanced Color Accuracy: Gen 3 covers 99% sRGB, 99% Rec.709, and 90% Adobe RGB, a boost from Gen 2’s more limited sRGB focus. Advanced Pen Tech: Upgraded to PenTech 4.0 with 16,384 pressure levels and better tilt detection, delivering greater control and stability. More Customizable Controls: Includes 5 programmable keys, 2 dial controllers, and 2 function-switch buttons—an upgrade over the 8-key-only layout of Gen 2. Flexible Connectivity: Dual USB-C ports with support for full-featured DP signal offer broader device compatibility with fewer cables.

These upgrades make the Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) a thoughtful evolution for anyone seeking a compact, professional-grade pen display.

    User Experience

The Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) gives off a polished, well-thought-out vibe. The packaging is pretty standard. It’s a retail-style box with a nice image of the tablet on the front. It comes with the basics: pen, nibs, and a 3-in-1 cable. The cable works fine, but I personally prefer the simplicity of a single USB-C connection. The tablet does support that, but unfortunately, that cable isn’t included.

As for build quality, the tablet feels solid. The stand is flexible and holds its position well at different angles, though I do wish it was built-in instead of being a separate piece. That’s one more item to carry if you’re on the go. That said, the tablet is slim and lightweight enough to toss in a laptop bag. I’d love to see a travel sleeve included to ensure the tablet and its accessories are kept together and safe.

Once powered on, the display looks sharp. It’s a 1080p screen on a 13.3-inch panel, and after changing the default resolution from 960×540 to 1920×1080, everything looked crisp and easy to work with. Text was clear, and drawing in Photoshop felt natural. Color-wise, HUION includes a calibration report with each unit, and the display seems to back that up. Colors were vibrant and consistent right out of the box. Even with a light shining directly on it, glare wasn’t a big issue.

The PW600L pen feels good in hand and has a nice weight to it. It’s not too light and not too heavy. As far as performance goes, it responded well to pressure. Heavier presses gave thicker lines, and lighter ones were soft and delicate, just as expected. Tilt functionality is there, but it didn’t feel super accurate. When I held the pen at an extreme angle, think shading with the side of a pencil, it didn’t always register unless the tip made solid contact.

Driver installation was pretty easy, and the control layout on the tablet is comfortable. I liked the mix of programmable buttons and the dual dials. The software let me customize things the way I like without much hassle. That said, I did run into a couple of hiccups. The app quit unexpectedly when I was doing simple tasks and new windows wouldn’t open on the tablet – even when it was the active display.

The 3-in-1 cable works, but it doesn’t allow for power delivery unless you use an external adapter, which isn’t included. I plugged the display into my MacBook Pro using a single USB-C cable, which solved the power issue. After about 90 minutes, my MBP’s battery dropped to 57% due to powering both devices.

    Conclusion

All in all, it’s a solid creative tool with a few quirks. I think the Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) is best suited for someone who’s used a drawing tablet before. The setup and driver adjustments might be a bit much for someone just starting out. You’ll need to download software to register pen input, and I did have some minor software issues, but for the price and performance, it hits the mark for hobbyists, students, and experienced creators looking for a compact, versatile screen tablet.
