The San Diego Police Department will celebrate its 136th birthday Tuesday, with a new Changing of the Guard ceremony.

The ceremony will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at 1401 Broadway in front of SDPD headquarters, according to the department.

Chief Scott Wahl, the department’s 36th chief and a second-generation SDPD officer, is set to give a speech at the ceremony. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and Councilmembers Stephen Whitburn and Marni von Wilpert will also be attending the celebration.

“The Changing of the Guard ceremony will consist of the passage of golden handcuffs from the most senior sworn member of the Department to its most junior,” the department said.

Sgt. Lawrence Cahill, who has been on the force for more than 39 years and set to retire next month, will pass the handcuffs to Officer Anthony Obregon, a graduate from the police academy this past March and a second-generation SDPD officer.

The ceremony will also consist of passing down the department’s flag from its senior staff member to its junior. Special Events Traffic Controller Cynthia Flores, who has been with the SDPD for 40 years, will pass the department’s flag to Dispatcher Catherine Dobbs, who is also a second-generation SDPD member.

“The SDPD was formally established in May 1889 with a focus on solely fighting crime. Over the years, the Department has evolved and continually strives to advance to the highest levels of public safety, trust and professionalism by strengthening community partnerships,” the department added.
