Brock Purdy is more relevant than ever.
But some San Francisco fans are unsure about the 49ers’ new overwhelming devotion to the team’s starting quarterback.
“The 49ers think this kid is the new Joe Montana … unreal,” one fan tweeted.
An up-and-down contract negotiation with San Francisco recently resulted in the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft receiving a massive five-year, $265 million deal.
That was a historic figure for Mr. Irrelevant, which Purdy became when he joined the pros out of Iowa State and was the final player chosen in the draft.
While many fans are still adjusting to the sight of Purdy having a $265m contract attached to his name, a new previously hidden detail in the deal is even more stunning.
The 49ers gave Purdy veto power normally reserved for only the elite quarterbacks in the NFL, including Patrick Mahomes.
“As part of his five-year, $265-million extension, 49ers QB Brock Purdy received a full no-trade clause for the duration of the deal,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo tweeted. “Purdy gets financial security and control over his future in a deal that will be finalized and official soon.“
The 25-year-old Purdy now makes $53 million annually, which is more than two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and Super Bowl-winner Jalen Hurts.
Purdy also makes $8m more a year than Mahomes, and has the same no-trade clause as the three-time Super Bowl champion.
There is no doubt that Purdy has played far above his former status as the No. 262 overall pick in 2022.
Patrick Mahomes can dictate his NFL future and say no to any tradegetty The 49ers gave Purdy the same powerGetty GettyHe received the huge deal and veto power after a tough 2024 campaign[/caption]But he’s only made one Pro Bowl, while the 2024 season was the worst of his career.
Purdy posted career lows in completion percentage (65.9) and passer rating (96.1) in a year that saw the 49ers go a disappointing 6-11 and fail to make the playoffs.
Handing Purdy $265m and a powerful no-trade clause doesn’t sit well with some San Francisco supporters.
“Bradley Beal 2.0,” one fan tweeted.
“Damn he robbed the 49ers,” a second fan posted.
“Purdy finessed the hell out of the 49ers and Kyle ’28-3′ Shanahan LOL. Sheesh,” a third fan wrote.

“Keeps getting worse for 49ers fans, stuck with this bum lmaooooo,” a fourth fan wrote.
That last comment is harsh, but Purdy has serious work to do in 2025.
The 49ers are aiming to go from worst to first in the competitive NFC West as the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals all were better in the division last year.
Purdy now faces the pressure of being paid like a true franchise QB on a team who believe their Super Bowl window is never closed.
Before last season they had reached three successive NFC title games, including Super Bowl defeat in 2024.
If he fails to deliver at an elite level, San Francisco could be stuck with Mr. Irrelevant – and a huge contract – for years to come.
