MOTORISTS are now being hit with higher than ever parking fines after a recent hike.
The new update is part of a harsher crackdown on violations, and will see drivers forced to fork out up to 10 times the previous amount.
Drivers are being implored to keep their meters topped up to avoid significantly higher fines.
The updated rates were brought in earlier this month in an effort to reduce parking violations.
Motorists in Bethalto, Illinois will now be served with much higher fines for any infractions.
The development comes after the Village Board approved an ordinance dramatically raising certain parking fines, reports The Telegraph.
These increases were unanimously approved a meeting on May 12 and will take effect once the changes have been published.
The process of publishing the ordinance usually takes a short amount of time, meaning these increased rates are likely to be brought in imminently.
Fines for illegal parking will increase from $5 to $50, if paid within five days.
Parking infractions which previously cost drivers $10 will now cost $60, if paid within 10 days.
If motorist fail to pay these fines within that time, a warning letter will be sent.
After receiving this letter, drivers have three days to pay a $75 fine, which has increased from $25.
And if fines are not paid in this time-frame, the new charges will range from $75 to $750.
This has increased from the previous $25 to $500 range for unpaid infractions.
Village Clerk Sue Lowrance told The Telegraph this is the first time the fines have been increased in many years.
And the Illinois town isn’t the only place in the US to hike up parking fines recently.
Baltimore has just increased fine rates as part of a new parking crackdown.
