ESPN makes dramatic last-minute broadcast change involving Juan Soto return to New York Yankees after hostile reception

ESPN made a surprising late broadcast change that saw them axe speaking to Juan Soto.

The New York Mets outfielder was booed by his old fans on his return to the Yankees Stadium.

Soto was set to be ESPN Sunday Night Baseball’s “mic’d up” player during the game.

Reporter Buster Olney announced just hours before the clash that they would be chatting to the Dominican and asking him about Aaron Judge’s brilliant year.

It comes after Judge reached base for the 100th time in just 44 games, which is the quickest anybody has got to the century since Barry Bonds in 2002 for the San Francisco Giants.

Several Mets fans took aim at ESPN as they were unhappy that Soto was set to be speak about his former and not current team mid-game.

In a wave of online backlash, one said: “Reason to mute ESPN as usual.”

Another added: “You’re going to mic up Soto…to ask him about…Aaron Judge. How about asking him about Pete, Lindor, or life on his new team? This is wildly frustrating and exactly why fans are glad baseball is leaving ESPN.”

More commented: “It’s honestly amazing that you decided to have Soto mic up and the first thing you are going to ask is about an opposing player.”

But there was a last-minute change and ESPN did not end up speaking to Soto.

They instead mic’d up his team-mate Brandon Nimmo as he discussed his facial hair, becoming a father and the team’s recent performances.

It is unclear what forced ESPN into switching from Soto to Nimmo.
