Weather delay didnt stop PGA Championship spectators from enjoying the course

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — It was storming Saturday morning and the grounds were expected to be damp and wet, possibly affecting play.

But it didn't stop spectators from coming out and enjoying the game.

"I was going to come out regardless. I'm from Florida, so obviously I go a long way to get here," said Gerry James.

James was one of thousands of spectators at Quail Hollow this weekend. He says he came out to see great golf from some of the best golfers in the world — many of whom are his favorites.

"This is one of four championships in the year that you have all of the best players in the world combined. So, if you're a lover of golf, you have to come," James said.

Round 3 started the day in a weather delay Saturday morning. Dark and heavy clouds covered the course and eventually that brought rain.

It pushed tee times back to 11:35. Regardless, James didn't think it would affect play too much.

"So it's not so much the greens here because they have a system to drive them, it's sub air and so not too many people know that, but they can get them (dry) fast right away. But the fairways... because the fairways will also be wet, it'll favor the longer hitters. So you're seeing some of that come up now," James said.

Armond Cadieux and his friends delayed their plans to get to the course because of the weather, but once it cleared up, they found themselves walking alongside the golfers.

"Great conditions. The wind's making the course play a little tough. Really cool seeing Bryson (DeChambeau) hit downwind on hole seven today. He hit like a 400-yard drive, but we were coming out rain or shine, golf plays in the rain too," Cadieux said.

The great conditions even brought out some of the youngest fans like 6-year-old Logan Pearce. She says she was up early this morning hoping she could still see her favorite golfer.

"I came to see Scottie Scheffler, it was amazing!" Pearce said.

Fans say the steady weather allowed them to have even more fun on the course.
