UNC Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 1 Georgia in NCAA Semifinals

Playing without ACC Player of the Year Reese Brantmeier, UNC struggled in its national semifinal match against No. 1 Georgia in Waco, TX Saturday. The Bulldogs controlled the match throughout and defeated the Tar Heels 4-0, ending Carolina’s season.

Georgia won the doubles point thanks to wins on No. 1 and No. 2 court. UNC had dropped the doubles point just twice in the previous 31 matches.

In singles, the Bulldogs then won the opening set on five of the six courts. Alanis Hamilton, Claire Hill and Thea Rabman all lost in straight sets, giving Georgia the 4-0 win. Brantmeier, Carolina’s top player in singles and doubles, would normally have played on No. 1 court in both portions of the match. She injured her knee during UNC’s quarterfinal win against No. 13 LSU Thursday. It’s the same knee which forced Brantmeier to miss nearly all of the 2024 season.

UNC ends the season 27-5 overall, having won 12 matches in a row (including the ACC Tournament championship) before Saturday’s defeat. Carolina reached the national semifinals for the fourth time in the last five seasons and fifth time in the last six NCAA Tournaments (the 2020 tournament was not played due to the COVID pandemic).
