Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star opening batsman Phil Salt has opened up on the conversations in the RCB dressing room over the retirement of the modern-day batting great Virat Kohli from Test cricket.
On Monday, May 12, India National Cricket Team superstar Virat Kohli took to his official Instagram handle to announce his decision to walk away from Test cricket after serving the team for 14 years.

Kohli's retirement from red-ball cricket came as a massive surprise to everyone, as he is currently 36 and has a lot of cricket left in him. Many expected him to play Test cricket till 40 and quit the format at the very last after his complete retirement from white-ball cricket.
Speaking to the broadcasters ahead of the RCB vs KKR IPL 2025 match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Phil Salt was asked about the talks in the RCB dressing room over Kohli's Test retirement.
He responded by revealing that there has not been a lot of talk about it, and Virat Kohli himself won't like it if that happens, as he would want everyone to focus on the IPL. Kohli stated:
"Not a lot to be honest. We haven't spoken much about it. Virat certainly won't be wanting people to speak about that. It's all about the playoffs and how we finish the group stage. That's been our focus."
Notably, Kohli retired from Test cricket after playing 123 matches and scoring 9230 runs at an average of 46.85, to go with 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries.
Not played a game of cricket in a while, so pretty excited to be back at full health - Phil Salt
Phil Salt, who missed the last few matches of IPL 2025 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru due to some health issues, said that he is delighted to be back at full fitness. He further talked about his training and said:
"Feeling good. Not played a game of cricket in a while so pretty excited to be back at full health. I work on the basics of batting, making sure I'm aligned and hitting the ball back where it comes from is always my first stop but definitely hitting the ball hard is one of the things I do regularly almost every training session just to stay on top of it."
While talking about the feeling when the ball hits the bat and leaves the ground, Phil Salt said that it's brilliant. He stated:
"It's brilliant. The enjoyment is probably in everything it takes to get there and sometimes you hit so many balls that the result you sort of gloss over it and it's nice. I always think back to moments like that when you play well and win a game for your team. What sort of goes before it and how disciplined I was."
Every game we have that must-win mentality - Phil Salt
The English opener also talked about Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) moving to the playoffs. He said that every time they step onto the field, they aim to win the matches for the fans, who have supported the franchise over the years. He said:
"When you're coming down the road to get to the Chinnaswamy, there's a sea of people. It's unbelievable support we've got here. Every game we have that must win mentality.
"It's pretty infectious what comes from the fanbase so it's a case of win 3 more in the group stage and then see where we end up from there."
Royal Challengers Bengaluru are currently at the second spot on the IPL 2025 points table with eight wins and three losses in 11 matches and an invisible 'Q' in front of their name. They have 16 points and a Net Run Rate of 0.482.
