Baseball roundup: Crean Lutheran surprises La Habra in first round of playoffs

A roundup of highlights from the Orange County games Friday in the first round of the CIF-SS baseball playoffs:

La Habra entered its first-round game of the CIF-SS playoffs as the Freeway League champion and No. 1 seed in Division 2, however the Highlanders were facing a familiar foe — an opponent that beat them twice in league play.

    Crean Lutheran did it again Friday in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs, scoring a 6-1 victory at La Habra.

    The Saints (19-10), who finished third in the Freeway League, scored twice in the second inning, added three runs in the fifth and another run in the seventh.

    They rebounded nicely from the last game they played against La Habra, a 13-0 loss on May 2.

    Ethan Chavez got the victory, giving up a walk and four hits in four innings. Blake Armstrong pitched three scoreless innings of relief while allowing only one hit.

    Sam Keller had three hits and three RBIs for the Saints. Quinn Tucker had two RBIs, and Ian McDermott scored twice.

    Jonah Mayo drove in Izaiah Posada with the only run for La Habra (19-11). Angel Acuna, who gave up three runs in 4 1/3 innings, was tagged with the loss.

    Crean Lutheran will be at West Ranch for Tuesday’s second-round game.

    In other Division 2 games:

    Servite 1, Riverside Prep 0: The Friars won at home behind a two-hit shutout from Toby Kwon. He didn’t walk a batter and had three strikeouts.

    Tomas Cernius doubled and scored in the first inning for the only run.

    Riverside Prep threatened with two on in the sixth, but the Friars (16-13) got out of the jam.

    Servite will be home against Canyon in the second round Tuesday.

    Canyon 10, Maranatha 6: The visiting Comanches seemed to stun the Minutemen by scoring four runs in the first inning. Canyon’s offense came alive again late, pushing three runs across in the bottom of the sixth inning.

    Camden Goetz capped the Comanches’ rally with a two-run home run. He finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs, a double and a home run.

    Fountain Valley 4, El Segundo 2: Down by a run, the home team Barons (16-13) scored three in the fifth inning courtesy of a strong performance from the bottom of the order. Tyler Peschke, Isaac Lomeli, Drake Robinson, and Josh Grack drove in runs for Fountain Valley.

    Logan Hunt, who pitched four innings, Peshke and Nathan Martinez combined for a three-hitter with five walks.

    Fountain Valley will host Trabuco Hills in the second round Tuesday.

    Trabuco Hills 4, Bonita 3: After giving up three runs in the top of the sixth inning, Trabuco (21-7-1) scored three in the bottom to steal a victory from the Bearcats (16-12).

    Evan Hall scored twice for the Mustangs, and Sam Crouse drove in two runs to lead the offense, which outhit Bonita, 10-3. Ryan Luce and Brady Meade had two hits apiece for Trabuco.

    Mike DeFrancesca struck out five and walked only one to get the victory.

    Foothill 6, Millikan 4: The Knights (18-11) scored three runs in the first and three in the sixth to hold off the visiting Rams (21-8).

    Aidan Colburn and Patrick Petrossi had two RBIs apiece for Foothill, which was outhit, 6-5, and committed three errors.

    Millikan scored twice in the seventh, chasing Gavin Lauridsen after 6 1/3 innings. Lauridsen was charged with three runs and five hits; he walked two and struck out seven. Reliever Kyle Telson got the final two outs and quashed the rally.

    Foothill will be at San Clemente for Tuesday’s second-round playoff game.

    San Clemente 8 Westlake 0: Mike Esparmer pitched a one-hitter and walked only one batter for the Tritons (19-10). He struck out seven.

    Joaquin Baumgardner had three hits, scored twice, and drove in two runs for San Clemente. Kaden Raymond had a home run and two RBIs. Cade Cerone added two hits, a run and RBI.

    The Tritons scored in five of their six batting opportunities against the Warriors (20-9) and won for the 13th time in 14 games.

    Mater Dei 3, South Hills 0: The Monarchs (16-13) got the best of a pitchers’ duel by scoring twice in the bottom of the third inning and once in the fifth.

    Brandon Thomas pitched a three-hitter and didn’t walk any while striking out seven.

    Ezekiel Lara drove in two runs, and Austin Gerken scored twice. Logan Miller had an RBI and scored a run.

    South Hills (21-8) was the first-place team from the Hacienda League.

    Mater Dei plays at Simi Valley in the second round Tuesday.

    DIVISION 4

    Woodbridge 4,Valley Christian of Cerritos 1: Caden Camacho had two hits, scored a run, and drove in a run to lead the Warriors (20-9) to a victory at home.

    Caleb Camacho scored twice and had an RBI, and Vincent DeMarco and Nevan Namgoong also drove in runs.

    DeMarco and Caden Camacho combined on a three-hitter. DeMarco pitched five innings and gave up five walks with five strikeouts; Camacho didn’t allow a hit and struck out two in two innings of relief.

    Woobridge will host Irvine in a second-round game Tuesday.

    Irvine 8, St. Bernard 0: The host Vaqueros (16-12) scored three runs in the third inning and four in the fourth to put away the Vikings.

    Evan Tamayo had two hits, scored two runs, and drove in two to lead Irvine’s offense. Adam Valencia added a run and RBI as the Vaqueros got contributions throughout the lineup.

    Drake Brito and two relievers combined on a three-hitter. Brito gave up all the hits, and walked one, while striking out seven. Camino Real League champ St. Bernard finished 19-7.

    Dos Pueblos of Goleta 5, Katella 3 (11 innings): The visiting Chargers (19-10) scored twice in the 11th to beat Katella (20-7), which fell short despite a good effort.

    Ben Villela pitched the first 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs; losing pitcher Anthony Garcia allowed only one run over the next 4 2/3 innings, but a home run in the top of the 11th against Vincent Aguilera was the difference.

    Miguel Prado had a hit, a run, and an RBI for Katella, and Alejandro Tinoco had two hits and an RBI.

    Sonora 3, Linfield Christian 2: The Raiders (17-12) won on the road to advance to the second round. The host Lions took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, but Sonora rallied with two runs in the sixth.

    Luke Crowder led the Raiders with two RBIs, and Jeffrey Agalsoff added the other.

    Winner Robby Blaine pitched five innings for the Raiders, and Caleb Orr closed out the last two as they combined on a four-hitter.

    Sonora will be home Tuesday to take on South Torrance in the second round.

    Monrovia 5, Capistrano Valley Christian 3: Despite going unbeaten in the San Joaquin League, the visiting Eagles (16-13) were turned back by Monrovia.

    DIVISION 6

    Estancia 10, Alhambra 8: The Eagles’ had a productive day at the plate, led by Vaughn McCrea, who had two hits and four RBIs. Other big contributors were Sawyer Atkinson (4 for 5, two runs, two stolen bases) and Jake Humphries (2 for 5, two runs, two RBIs).

    Lincoln Silva went 2 1/3 innings (two earned runs) to earn the win and Nico Viramontes got the save (1 2/3 innings. no runs).

    Estancia will host Foothill Tech on Tuesday in the second round.

    Pacifica Christian 6, Quartz Hill 2: The Tritons will host Muir in the second round Tuesday.

    Burroughs of Ridgecrest 7, Savanna 6: The Rebels (16-13), despite being outhit 11-5, lost on the road after the Burros (15-12) scored in the bottom of the sixth inning.

    Tustin 2, Littlerock 0: Despite being outhit, 7-4, the host Tillers (13-15-1) scored in each of the first two innings to win a pitchers’ duel.

    Adam Whyte pitched six innings and allowed five hits, two walks, and struck out seven; Nathan Saltzer gave up two hits and two walks and struck out two in his inning of relief.

    Daniel Benally and Josh Saltzer had a hit and scored a run for Tustin, and Angel Rodriguez had an RBI.

    Tustin will be at Heritage Christian for a second-round game Tuesday.

    DIVISION 8

    University Prep 9, Bolsa Grande 4: The host Jaguars scored three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to beat Bolsa Grande (15-7).

    New Roads of Santa Monica 11, Santa Ana 6: The hosts scored in every inning but the first as they beat Santa Ana (15-11).

    La Quinta 2, Rosemead 1: The Aztecs will be home Tuesday in the round second, taking on Cate.

    YULA 7, Rancho Alamitos 3: In a game played Thursday, Rancho Alamitos jumped out to a 3-2 lead, but YULA took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

    Carson Labossiere went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Rancho Alamitos (10-12).

    Valencia 11, Temecula Prep 5: Valencia will be home Tuesday for a second-round game against Arroyo.
