We need less whining, more creative solutions, for higher education

I write this comment as the wife of a retired full professor at an out-of-state university in response to Assistant Professor Engstrom at UNC, who states that research and innovation in science is on the precipice of going off a cliff because of President Trump’s attempts to cut federal spending, stop anti-semitism and one-sided opinion in teaching at American colleges and universities.

There are other sources of funding for research at UNC and other schools. It does not have to be always paid for by American taxpayers. A well-rounded curriculum will turn out good scientists as well as a program heavy on research. Or is the physics department falling subject to the old “publish or perish” philosophy put forth in much of higher education? Is UNC preparing high school physics teachers?

Our country is deep in debt. The country gave its approval for President Trump and others to begin to lift it up to solvency among many other needs such as safety, jobs and innovative ways to be successful in the future.

I would like to hear less whining and hear more creative thinking about how higher education can prepare students for their futures and the future of our country without dipping into the federal trough of taxpayer money as much as it has been lately. I would like teaching and research conducted and discussed with balanced facts and opinions open to all points of view.

TV commercials play to our addictions

I enjoy watching Nuggets basketball and Broncos football. Yet, I am concerned about constant advertising and their messages. One ad showed that God drinks alcohol! My church promotes love, and it does not believe we should participate in choices that can cause addictions or can bring harm. John Wesley did write that one should drink beer, in moderation. But that was because at his time beer was the only way to get clean water! “But we do need to be conscious and aware of what we are putting into our bodies and how we are living.” (Pastor Jeremy Scott)

With that in mind, consider the following data regarding advertisements during a recent Denver Nuggets game.

The first advertisement insinuated that God drinks alcohol!

There were a total of 99 advertisements in three hours, or 33 ads per hour.

About 10% of the ads promoted alcohol.

Another 10% promoted food. Are Americans the most overweight population on the planet?

Nearly 13% of the ads promoted automobiles. Are Americans great managers of budgets or highly in debt?

One ad promoted a movie for children that contained violence.

Four of the ads promoted gambling.

If we look at all the ads that relate to addiction (alcohol, gambling, over-eating, overspending), we may better understand why America is suffering from assorted problems. Yes, it takes a lot of money to fund a professional sports team, and it is exciting to root for our favorites. But we need to be alert about how we are constantly tempted to drink alcohol, overeat, and overspend. Thirty-three advertisements per hour tell us what decisions we should make. Perhaps one hour of church should be added to our activities!
