Top Memorial Day Destinations in the U.S. Revealed—And You Might Be Surprised

Memorial Day is the unofficial launch of summer in the United States, with Americans taking advantage of the three-day weekend to celebrate graduations and the start of pool season.

It’s also a very busy travel weekend in the country, and while some use the Monday off to go to the beach or lake, others mark the holiday in a different way.

Memorial Day is a national holiday because it’s meant to pay tribute to fallen members of the armed forces and to honor those who gave their lives for their country. As a result, Memorial Day parades are patriotic in nature and many intentional events take place at war memorials.

Per WGN, a new ranking shows which cities in the United States are the best Memorial Day destinations. Sixt, an international mobility services provider, considered several factors in its ranking, including the number of war memorials in each city and how many veteran-owned businesses each location has.

It also took into account the historical significance of the Memorial Day traditions in each city, resulting in a list of 25 towns and cities that it ranks as the best for honoring the meaning of the holiday.

Richmond, Va. took the top spot with its whopping 1,771 veteran-owned businesses and 17 war memorials and monuments. Columbus, Ga. and Chicago, Ill. took the number two and three spots, respectively, with Indianapolis, Ind. and Wilmington, Del. rounding out the top five.
