Ronda Rousey made UFC history in 14 seconds – but Conor McGregor beat record months later

Ronda Rousey submitted Cat Zingano inside 14 seconds at UFC 184 to create history.

It was Rousey’s fifth defence of the women’s bantamweight title during a period when she was arguably the most famous fighter alive.

Zingano pressed the champion instantly but got caught in the clinch of Rousey.

‘Rowdy’ then flung her American counterpart to the canvas and took Zingano’s back before locking in an armbar as the latter tapped instantly.

It was the fastest finish in a UFC title fight and the joint-fastest stoppage of any UFC fight in the organisation’s history.

The victory surpassed Andrei Arlovski’s lethal knockout of Paul Buentello inside 15 seconds in a heavyweight title bout at UFC 55 in 2005.

It had taken almost ten years for the record to be broken, but a new one was set less than ten months later.

Conor McGregor‘s famous knockout of Jose Aldo at UFC 194 in December 2015 instantly found itself etched in UFC history books.

McGregor was relaxed and smiling at the beginning of one of the most highly anticipated featherweight bouts of all time.

Aldo was the complete opposite, and found himself lying on the canvas after just 13 seconds.

The Brazilian went in with a straight right hand to set up a one-two combination. McGregor took a step back, landed a huge right hook, and the fight was over just like that.

Aldo announced his retirement from MMA after suffering a unanimous decision defeat to Aiemann Zahabi this past weekend at UFC 315, while McGregor hasn’t fought since 2021.

Rousey also smashed her own record from one year prior on the night she beat Zingano in front of a sell-out 17,000 crowd at Los Angeles’ Staples Centre.

She brutally stopped Alexis Davis at UFC 175 in July 2014 after just 16 seconds, meaning her victory over Zingano was the second finish of her UFC career under 20 seconds.

Rousey ended up leaving MMA having finished all-but one of her 12 professional victories in the first round.

“We were expecting that she might come out and do something flying at me right away,” Rousey said, just like McGregor anticipated Aldo to do something similar.

“That’s not usually how you land an armbar at that angle, but it works.

“It was a lot like judo transitions, where you scramble the second you hit the ground.

“I made that up on the fly, to be honest. But it was kind of funny: We were going toward the ground, and I kind of reverted back to judo mode and was thinking, ‘Don’t touch your back. It’s a point.’

“That’s where the acrobatic thing came from, was thinking about not touching your back in judo.”

Rousey defeated Bethe Correia inside 34 seconds in her next fight six months later and must have felt on top of the world.

However, that was her last victory in Dana White‘s promotion, as she left the sport following back-to-back defeats to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes.

She ignited hopes of a UFC comeback in March after she posted pictures of her training with her old foe Zingano.

But, the rumours have gone quiet again and it seems highly unrealistic that we will ever see ‘Rowdy’ in the Octagon again.

“I had nothing left in me. My husband (ex-UFC heavyweight Travis Browne) is amazing, and he really brought me out of some tough times.

“He would just look at me and say: ‘You’re not only this. You’re more than just a fighter.’

“It’s something I should embrace and showcase to the world, and that’s why I’m here.”
